Are XJ's really bad Gas Guzzlers?
the title says it all. I want to know from current XJ owners about their mpg's. How bad are they? What are you commutes looking like? What are Driving styles? lead foot or feathered toe? etc etc. I'm pretty sure this has been covered by someone before so please bear with me. thanks
I get around 15mpg, 3" lift 30" tires. Not feather toed but I don't floor it everywhere. But I ain't afriad to stomp the gas everynow and then. Its not the best on gas but its better than a lot of full size trucks out there
i get about 12-18 mpg, all depends on the terrain.
Im running 33 inch tires with 4.56 gear ratio.
I also have the ax-15 tranny so i think that is a little more fuel efficient.
The way my gears and tires are i get really good gas on mountian roads and city driving
on the highway i get the worst mileage because my 5th gear tops out at about 65mph and 2500 rpms

The whole behind this is because im in the market for an XJ. Never had anything bigger than a honda civic lol. Im aware that it will never get the mpg's that my civic gets. This will be my home to work and vice versa vehicle. After researching i read that a stock XJ should get around 16/20.The distance from my house to my job is about 13.8 mile so I dont think it will be that bad

If you leave them stock you can get 20mpg highway, and about 15-16 city. I get about 11mpg in the winter doing mostly town driving with 31" MT's, soon to be 34" tsls... those wont help at all lol

Stock 95 Sport, slightly heavier 235/75R15 General Grabber AT2's on steel wheels, 195K, Auto and i get about 15 everywhere, highway or backroads makes no difference for some reason. I tend to take off from a stop quicker than the average person, but certainly not flooring it from every stop, lol. Heavier foot than most and not afraid to stomp on it when the need, or urge, arises.
I also have a 93 Base which is a bit lighter, 94 or 95 they added side impact beams in the doors and bracing in the roof AND the 93 is missing a lot of metal from the rockers and floors (stupid salt), and that one gets about 16-17. 205K auto 4x4.

I go miles to tank and its low. Mine is just for offroad use. Only time I checked the actually mileage I got 16mpg on the highway. That was my old motor with almost 300K on the clock though.
