I am sure somebody had Grand for awhile.
I would like to know difference between them.
Let us say, engine/transmission/transfer case are the same.
Do Grands have better MPG?

they don't come with the same transmissions as an option.
grands are heavier, worse on gas. They are coil springs at all 4 wheels instead of leaves in the back.
I won't get into any of the pros and cons though... this thread is likely to start another flame war, lol.

I got avg 21 mpg out of my 93 grand cherokee on the way to colorado and back. Was all hiway in a 4.0 5 spd and kept around 70 all the way. I was impressed 240k on it did have fresh oil, plugs, cap, rotor and air filter.
Main difference is the optional v8 in the grands which I wouldnt want to work on anyway and they only offered a manual in the grands the first few years of the ZJ. The grands have coil sprung rear ends as opposed to leaves in the regular cherokee. There's really not enough difference to get the jiffy pop out but I bet they're are some people on here really **** about it.

In 93 (first year of ZJ production) the auto trans was the AW4.
Anyways, to the OP. Grands seem to be oriented more toward comfort, you get more room, bigger doors, more options, smoother ride etc. They are also excellent, even stock, offroad. Being several hundred pounds heavier than an XJ and still having the 4.0l makes some people say they are a bit sluggish. Couldn't argue against that, but I've got the 318 V8 in mine so it's no issue. The magnum V8s (5.2l and 5.9l) they used in ZJs are also very durable engines. In my opinion either one is a great vehicle.

I expected higher MPG from Grand, considering less brick like body.

My complaint about the grands are.
Never came with a strong rear axle. Only d35 and d44a.
Little heavier than the xj
5.2 versions aren't as reliable as the 4.0.
the auto tranny is nowhere near as reliable as the xj aw4.
But, they are very capable in stock form . The ride is nicer, an much more comfortable. They are safer
