Im looking into buying a cherokee to start modifying into my fishing/hunting rig and was just wondering how much i should be paying for a running xj in decent shape. I found a 98 for 1500 but the motors torn apart....

Kbb is pretty accurate on market values. If you're not building a DD, go higher miles cheap. 4.0's tend to be 300-350k engines.

Depends on the year. I paid 3k on my 2000 XJ with 142k 3" BB lift, 31" BFG AT's and a full size spare with matching rim. If you're wanting a hunting rig then look for something around 1500 and spend money making it how you want.

I've had it since October and haven't had any problems. (Knock on wood.) PO's husband was a mechanic and used Mobile 1 in it. Doesn't leak any oil. In fact I'm due for an oil change and I checked the oil level yesterday and it's still full and I haven't added a drop since it was changed 5k ago.

I've just done general maintenance like spark plugs, red top battery, shocks and replacing old faded bumper caps.

If that has under 215k and it runs and drives, and the owner seems on the level, that looks like a decent deal.

So trans is slipping.. Has 201k miles. Anyway this could be an easy fix other.than.just swapping trans. He says ac and motor are good and no rust or interior issues. Gonna look at it tomorrow hopefully.

Transmissions are cheap and easy if you have the right tools... but what is a "straight v6"?

Well the motor fired right up easily, but runs a little rough. Im not sure if a good tuneup will help that or not, any tips? The transmission shifts into each gear fine and i was able to drive it around the lot that it was in but he said it starts to slip when going faster. I didnt want to risk getting stranded somewhere in that part of town so no true test drive. The trans fluid smelled kinda burnt also. The rest of jeep looks pretty clean including paint and body. Pretty sure im gonna pick it up tomorrow just gotta sleep on it. Was kind of in rush to take pics so they suck...
