Default XJ chugging like it needs gas... but it doesn't

My XJ has started to do the whole chugging notion if I try to give it any gas and go faster than 3mph.

I have also noticed a clanking of some sorts towards the front driver side of the vehicle. But go figure, every time I'd stop to check it out it'd stop temporarily.

Im stuck on the road, and strapped for cash so unfortunately a shop is out of the question at this time.

Luckily, there is a Walmart across the way... but I am too afraid to have it chug like that across a busy intersection.

Any tips on this would be great. I'm still learning about engine and whatnot so barewith me if I ask a questions on your reply.

Classic signs of a failed fuel pump.

How about if it comes and goes?

My 1998 4.0 does that when it's hot - never when it's cold. But if I pop it into neutral and work the gad pedal a few times it smoothes out and revs and runs OK. Then back in gear and it might not do it again for a day or two.

I have no idea where to look for such an intermittent problem. <g>

Any ideas?

Where on the planet are you? I ask because maybe somebody on here is near enough to help out in person?

Thanks for your replies.

I am in Tucson, AZ

I was able to get it to barely chug down the street to the closest mechanic. Its still sitting in the shop waiting to be looked at.

When I got it to the mechanic, he came out at looked at it. It backfired really nicely for him.

What shop if I may ask. I am in Tucson too and know a few. Plus I know a bit of knowledge if you want me to take a look. I won't charge you anything to go look at it

The Break Max at Pantano and Speedway. They already have it on the lift, I called about 30 ago for an update. DM me with any shop suggestions! Thanks Guywitha92

Small world, eh? I am in NJ at the moment, although my Jeep is in west Florida - but I have a brother in Tucson. <g> He never works on anything so at the least he would know where there's a good shop to tweak your Jeep back into shape.

No matter where you end up going, or getting, to work on it for you - come back here and get a second opinion at least.

There are a couple shops I go to. The jack furriers on speedway, the guy is a jeep guy so he knows his stuff, or pv automotive on 22nd near kolb. Also, 1st rock 4x4 on roger. The owner Karl is pretty cool.

Mine was acting very similar and I was told it was the fuel pump. It only acted up when hot. (on a trail at the bottom of a hill) So I replaced the pump it's been running great.
