I have done it all. My 240 was a great project, it went through some different phases. I have a ton of experience with these, even used to have a pretty popular forum. I was heavily involved with the 240 community when it was really getting big. Anyway, you are not going to do any kind of swap and have anything decent for that kind of budget.
most engines now are beat, so you want to do a headgasket right off the bat, a clutch, good engine mounts, it would be a good time to get a front mount, of course exhaust, intake etc. It adds up quick.
My final tally with my car as pictured, was roughly 27k$
The car made 419 RWHP on pump gas, and was setup primarily to be a drift/road race car.

My current Jeep geared, locked, longarms, 35's etc. I have less than 4k$ into.
basically it came down to my wife (then girlfriend) couldnt do anything with me and the cars. she came to the track, supported me and all that, but she just sat there and watched. Wheeling is great because she can do it with me. This is also why I love the cherokee. I can have a friend or 2 come with us, and we can all have a good time.
eh for the hell of it, heres one in action with its first nose

i would def go with an xj, i have a 240sx n i admit its a nice project but has gotten pricey, i just baught my 91 xj and have put more on it with less money than that rice burner thats sittin in the back yard. if u want speed the 4.0 ho is an awsome engine with dinamic potential utube has great vids on cherokees vs porches watch n u decide. so i would go with the xj cuz u got speed n power with the added bennifit of going off road. but on the other hand i got a 240sx for sale lol for what money u got all its needen is some paint lmao!

17x9 in front with 1" spacers (supposed to be their staggered 17" rear wheel)
18x9.5 in back with 1" spacers. the sad thing is there wasnt a wider rim available in my lug pattern. I was going to have a set made. same front, just with less backspace to get rid of spacer, but I was gonna go 10.5-11" wide in the rear. I could fit the 18x9.5 without the spacer. But I ran it for looks.
it had falkens first, when they just came out

Clean 240 that's how you build a car but someone on here might think its ricey I sure don't.
& yeah I'll have to agree with you on that. Building an xj is going to be a lot cheaper, most likely gettin another Cherokee (: I miss mine so much

All 4x4s are hard on gas unless you get a diesel or swap one in something. My brothers 01 f150 4x4 basicly stock gets like 12mpg,My friends stock jk gets around 15mpg and its a 4 banger. Now if you take a older chevy or ford and do a cummins swap it might see 20mpg but it will take a lot of cash to get it.
That's what I don't understand. That is an absolute silly amount of money for 400hp. That's what my uncle just paid for his Cadillac cts V, basically a Corvette luxury car, full leather with navigation, oh and a warranty. The motor in my car cost me about $1500 to put together and makes all of that to the tires, all motor, on pump gas. To each their own I guess but just seems like throwing money away building them things. I guess there's people that would say the same thing about our Jeeps.

That's what happens when you do it right. It didn't cost 27k$ for 400hp.
It cost 5k+ for the suspension, 1k for the rear and axles, 1k for that perticular intercooler, **** the aem ems, is 1700$. I don't slap junk together. Suspension work isn't cheap for this kind of use.
And no that wouldn't have been us. No one on our forum was into drag racing with our cars. Not to say I didn't embarrass a few people and a few mustangs/ camaros. But that wasn't our deal. I can ensure you though my car at 400whp and 2400 lbs, was no slouch.
And if it really felt like drag racing I would have got my mustang.

But thanks for sharing that story. I do remember someone with a white 240 that had a rb25, it was stock and a girl drove it, about 5 years ago or so. Only one around here then.
So anyway, front fenders were version select 30mm wide and rears were 50mm wide, the rear lip was cut and hammered out against the glass fender. You litterally could not get a finger between the tire and fenders.

Oh and I'm much more impressed by making 400+ to the ground with a 2.0 liter than something twice or more its size. I made well over 100hp per hole also. That's what you have to think about.
