Default Would you buy an XJ with a rebuilt engine?

What is everyone's opinion on an XJ that has 260k on the body with a rebuilt engine at 206k. The seller is asking $2000. Everything else is in good condition, minimal rust, everything works. It also has new exhaust, new radiator and new steering stabilizer.

If oil pressure is good, no bad noises, and it runs OK I wouldn't see a problem. If it's a 2000 or 2001 model the original engine may have been lunched by a cracked cylinder head, or maybe it was just abused. That's what I paid for my 1999 XJ 4 years ago with about that mileage on it, though it did not have a rebuilt engine - the original still runs great. (It came with new radiator and hoses, thermostat, water pump, serpentine belt, and tires.)

I would very much like proof that the engine was rebuilt. Receipts from a shop or from the parts replaced or something. Anyone can claim an engine is rebuilt. Ask where they had it done or who did it if it matters to you. If they can't answer then assume it isnt true.

But like said above if it runs good and everything seems fine i wouldnt let it scare me off. To me if there is no proof then the new or rebuilt engine claim doesnt mean anything. Especially if they are saying the new ot rebuilt engine has alot of miles already

Now if it makes noises, leaks really bad, hoses and wires and cables are spliced together, bolts are missing, connectors are zip tied together, I would consider passing because you may get yourself into a heap of trouble.

Look for the oil pressure to be nice and high like a build with only 30k on it should be. If not, stay away. Only way you can tell for sure.
