'01, been a long time now though it seems like yesterday... If the powers that be decided to bring the old XJ back to the future with a few tweaks here and there with the body and interior but with the same ol trusty 4.0... I think the Commander comes close to what I'm looking for...

If it had solid axles and looked relatively the same, then maybe. It'd have to be cheap though (sub-$20k).
I think the reason that XJ's are so popular is because they're cheap, simple, capable, easy to work on, and some might consider them "disposable". A new one probably wouldnt sell very well in all honesty.

When the XJ was in production, gas was cheap. As much as I love the reliability of the 4.0, it wouldn't make economic sense for it to be brought back. Then there is the whole emissions problem and safety standards. If it weren't for these issues the XJ and TJ would probably still be in production.

they made millions of these things I don't see why it would make them so hard to sell, grand cherokee seems to be doing okay..
I'm thinking leave a more open format to the vehicle for the DIY'er, expeditionist's, survivalist, doomsdayers, weekend warriors could tweak them to fit their liking...
bare bones package is what I'm after, and something with a stick.....

Probably, if it had a diesel. I don't see how anybody could justify purchasing a gasoline engine larger than about 3L these days.
Then again a car from the south without any rust is close enough to "new" for me! The unibody's the only non-replaceable part.

If they stuck true to their roots, it would be nice, but the fact is I would never pay 30,000 for a brand new vehicle. It would have to have solid axles, standard T-case without any electronic shifting bull****, and the less plastic the better. Bedlined floors from the factory would be a nice option. I would also think a newly improved 4.0 would be a great option. People would buy it. Also, NO PLASTIC HEADLIGHT HOUSINGS. That would be a dealbreaker for me. Any sort of stupid-looking aerodynamics. The Commander sucks, I wouldn't even compare it....at least it has a solid rear axle though...but to go to the mall with.

absolutely not, youd have to be an idiot to buy one.
though if they made something that looked similar, with a more modern powertrain and a solid rear axle... id think about it. there really is no reason to, the JK is a great truck.

I don't even like the look of the new ones. They'd have to bring back the older body style, have a solid front axle, have an actual transfer case, bring back our beloved 4.0 and AW4 transmission.
