I need help! My jeep has a lifter tick and dont know how long it will last. I heard of using a marvel mystery oil and i dont think it will fix it completely. Would it be worth it to fix the tick or get a used motor? Thanks

Every 4.0L has loud lifter tick. It's normal, unless it's really really loud there's no reason to worry about it.

The 4.0 is one if the best American engines ever made, it is Soo durable it won't die for a long time.. some engines are just noisy, try heating all the Damn noise a brand new Subaru makes haha. Just count it as one of the XJs many unique attributes.

MMO is not junk.

And to the OP, make sure you run a good oil filter, napa gold, wix, mopar etc. You can substitute a quart of oil for a quart of MMO at your next oil change and it should help with the tick.

On your next couple oil changes run 1/3 can of Seafoam in the oil about 30 miles before you change the oil and filter and I bet it goes away.

While you're at it run a 1/3 in the gas tank and the last 1/3 in the intake. Will do wonders for cleaning the fuel system and such without breaking too much crap loose at once.

For the intake dump a small amount in (few teaspoons worth) at a time with the motor off. Once it's in, fire it up and rev the motor til it stops smoking and repeat.

Makes a huge difference in performance and mpg. Just gotta be smart about it instead of dumping a full can in on a 100k+ mile motor and fuel system that's never been cleaned out.

If you really want to get your motor clean BG makes a machine/system called The Squid if you can get your hands on one.

Hooks up to the motor and cycles chemicals through it on a timer to clear carbon and such from the combustion chamber, compression rings, ect.

The chemicals for it cost like $70 but they're well worth it. GM vehicles built in the last 15 years or so in particular tend to have a lot of problems with oil consumption later in their lives.

My dad's got a 99 Suburban. About a year ago the oil consumption got really bad around 250k on it. BG rep at work let me borrow one of the units (had to buy the chemicals though) and we ran it on his truck. It's got over 300k on it now and it runs like it's brand new and it's exceeding MPG estimates.

You don't want to run it long term by any means in your oil. Just enough to cycle through a time or two before changing it.

It's not even about running it until it explodes. What were saying it these motors have a tick by nature. I've had 6 jeeps all powered by the l6 all with the same noisy valve train. They are pushrod motors. They will be loud.

A tick in the valve train and a rod knock are 2 different things. You may also think it's something serious buy it could also be a bad water pump or an exhaust leak.

You can also run diesel in your oil then flush add new oil. It will help to clean out the engine just like seafoam.

And I don't mean drive it for a week with diesel in your oil. Run it for a bit like you would with seafoam, flush and add new oil.

For sure. It's one of those things YMMV on. Just like the engine restore engine restorer crap, it clogged up my oil passages and dropped my hot oil pressure to 3 psi
