Default Winch Help

SO i got very stuck bymyself the other night, ( will tell story later, Still sour about it) and it took forever to get pulled out. I Want to buy a winch and just started looking. I dont rock crawl usually just play in mud and sand. There are always trees around and i can hook up to them with a chain and ****** block.

How small of a winch can i go?

Will a 4000pound winch cut it?

how much cable ususally comes on a winch

I found some good deals on electric winches that are all under 5000 pounds, would this work or is this not recomended. I know the jee weights in at about 3100 on the scales, mable a little less do to all the rot. lol

Most will say you need one that has a capacity that is double your jeeps weight.

At min 2x your jeep. I have a 10k and have burned it up once, I will get a 12k winch next time. When you are real stuck in the mud you could be dragging 10 x the weight of your jeep. And I wouldn't fall for an imitation I have a warn on both my jeeps, a little more in the beginning, when you need to use it you want it to work! I have burned up my warn but it took 2 powerstrokes to get me out that time. I was wheeling a dry lake bed I thought it was just mud, and i stopped..........I had to crawl out the slider window.

Def want at least an 8k. Also DO NOT wrap a chain around a tree, you'll kill it, that's what tree saver straps are for.

If you are trying to find a budget friendly winch the last harbor freight flyer I got had a 10 k winch for like 2 hundred some bucks. But I think the smittybuilt 8k is only 299 and they are ok.

My friend just picked this up after his old Mile Marker burnt up after 10 years of abuse.

hell, half the time I can't even get my xrc8 to engage. and then I had to use it to get up the rest of a hill when my rear driveshaft on, and the **** stick who put my winch in engaged, pulled the lever out.. pretty irate about that. other than that, I love my xrc8, its worked great the 10 or so times I've had to use it haha. but now its a paperweight on my bench till I give SB a call.

Buy a Warn or all the China Winches are about the same "SmittyBuilt, Rough Country (what I had - free remote), Harbor Freight), so then it is just a matter of who has the best warranty, customer service, and replacement parts. I had a friend at a 4x4 warehouse told me then to go with Rough Country. One thing for certain is that you will never get everyone to agree which one is best - AND I AGREE .... I would get at least 8K if not more .
