Hey there, I have a question for y'all. My brother-in-law brought me his jeep to swap rear ends, he also got me the other diff. My question is "on a '01 Cherokee Sport 4.0L with a Dana35, would a Chrysler 8.25 have the same gear ratio or will there be issue's between front and rear." I'm doing this for next to nothing so I don't want it to bite me in the a*# later on. Thanks

 

It depends.

If an xj has a 5-speed manual, it probably has 3.07 gears.
If an xj has an auto tranny, it probably has 3.54 gears.
If an xj has an auto tranny and a tow package, it probably has 3.73 gears.

Compare your jeep to the donor, and make sure they match up, and the ratio will probably be the same, but you won't know for sure unless you pull the covers on both and compare the ratio stamped on the ring gear.

There "should" be a small metal tag under one of the bolts that hold on the diff cover. If it is there, it'll tell you the ratio.

 

Most XJs with the towing package have the 3.55 gears, especially the newer models. I wish mine had 3.73 ha

 

are you sure? because i don't have a towning package and i have 3.55s according to my build sheet i got from jeep.

Most newer auto cherokees have 3.55 in general I'm pretty sure

 

to the OP i would look for a tag or pull covers, good idea to replace fluids when you swap anyway, why not.

 

i thought it was 3.55 gears not 3.54

 

3.55 (tomayto) 3.54 (tomahto). Same axle, same ring/pinion tooth count. Someone just rounded differently.

3.73 towing package gears I'm pretty sure ended very early in the 90s if not in the Renix era. You used to be able to get the Fuel Economy gearing as well, which was some wacky ratio to keep RPM down when cruising. Towing package was changed to include AW-4 with cooler, hitch, and possibly upgraded brakes.

Chrysler standardized on 4 gear sets that went with the rest of the drive train:

3.07: 4.0L gas, any TD w/ manual (AX-15, NV3550)
3.55: 4.0L gas, any TD w/ auto (AW-4)
4.10: 2.5L gas w/ manual (AX-5)
4.56: 2.5L gas w/ auto (32RE or some crap)

May differ from what's actually in there though. Only way to be sure is to count teeth.
