Why Cherokee???
What made you pick a Jeep Cherokee to buy, build and live with???I've had MANY different brands through the years, but always had a thing for Jeeps.Being an AMERICAN made machine, and having such huge aftermarket support is great.I'm glad i purchased mine, and i'm gonna be a Jeep guy for the long haul
.
Even as a little kid, I wanted some sort of Jeep... (I wanted a Wrangler originally though... I was hooked on the Rubicon in my early teens)
Then I went to Chevy... (Wanted a Colorado)... and my dad had a diesel Jetta for work... then he got a new job about 7 miles from home as opposed to 70... so they kinda gave the Jetta to me and he got his Tahoe back out... then I became a VW guy...
And last year my dad bought back his MJ that my parents bought when they were married... We found parts for it at junk yards and he tought me the basics...
I then fell in love with the Jeep name again and the 4.0 engine... Im more hooked on Jeeps now than anything though... sorry for my novel, just wanted to share it...lol

I never intended to get hooked this hard. My car was on its last leg, I have been wanting something 4wd for a very long time, I started hunting craigslist for trucks/suv's Saw a 4 banger jeep for $500 but never got the deal through, guy was impossible to stay in touch with but just seeing that first jeep had me drooling, I NEEDED to find another deal on a Jeep. Sure enough I saw one that was 2 door 4wd already had tow package, grill guard, and maybe even lifted for 700$ well, turns out it was sold before I got a chance to contact the guy.
Well that made me want one even MORE kept hunting and picked up my curent jeep for $700 first couple days I had it I was thinking about lifts and really LEARNING how to do my own work on it.
Started wrenching on it and loved every minute and needed more. I now try to find SOMETHING to do with it every day.
Found this forum and well....now I am hooked really bad.
Hmm that was kind of a book, sorry.

Being over here in England, We didnt get the XJ until 93, and I was a reletivly young, newly married, with a baby, guy. There was no way I could afford one of these new fangled £26000 American monsters, even if they were nearly half the price of the cruddy British equivelant 4x4's. I loved the shape and the level of equipment that came as standard.
I had to wait 12 years, until I could aford a used one, and am now on my 2nd (the first one was a rust bucket). It was a "safe" option for my wife and 2 kids, as we wanted somthing a little stronger than the Escort that we had at the time. I started out with it just being a Road Car, but then, quite by accident, started to asociate with a British "Jeep Owners" club, who of course, did a fair bit of "Off Road" stuff, and I have not looked back, since.
I now run, with a buddy, the UK's only specialist "Jeep" breakers yard

I wanted a reliable vehicle and according to the reader reviews on MSN auto, the Cherokee was a good one that could take a lot of miles.
Little did I know that was only the engine internals, and that every single other part, seal, sensor, nut, bolt, joint, bushing and fuse I could possible think of would break, wear out, fail, leak, blow or explode.
I've shoveled cash at mine like I'm rich and she still needs many things done, in hindsight I wish I'd bought something more reliable like a 76 Pinto.
I've packed my Jeep with supplies that are a direct reflection of her unreliability.
- Tools
- Tow Rope
- Brake fluid
- Hose clamps\ hose tape
- Haynes Manual
- Gallon of radiator coolant
- Flashlight
- Fire Extinguisher
- Holy Water
- Flares
- Jumper cables
- Fix-a-flat
I'd venture to say most 15 year olds could build a better car from scratch in their high school shop class using scrap lumber, but this is the kind of POS hunk of junk you get when stupid, lazy, over paid, unionized American auto workers build your vehicle.
But somehow I love my Jeep anyway and won't get rid of it.

I have had 3 Cherokees, one was just for parts. I owned my first one for three years, then sold it and the parts XJ and bought a Wrangler. I only had the Wrangler for a month and sold it! Props to those who love Wranglers, I couldn't stand it. Anyway I am back with my newest 95 XJ.
Why Cherokee? This is what I argue with those that I run into and talk to about XJ's
Room for people and gear, but small enough to squeeze through tight places on trails.
Very capable drive train: 4.0 will go forever, trans are strong and axles(even the D35 in my opinion) are strong for an average vehicle
Huge aftermarket support, to lift and equip the XJ's to go anywhere
And It's a Jeep!

I got my first one because I lived where it got hot in the summer and snow and ice in the winter. I wanted a rig with air and a good snow rig. I just can't leave a stock rig stock, so I started in and won't quit until there is nothing original except the unibody.
