Default Whinny Transmission.

I have a 1990 jeep cherokee 4x4 4.0 with and automatic transmission. The other day I was out looking for some trail to ride or a mud hole to go through and low and behold I found a big feild out in the state forest and it was full of mud holes! I eased my jeep into one taking it nice and slow I started to get that slowing down sinking feeling and I stomped it Tires spinning mud flying and adrenalin pumping. and my trans mission started to whine. I already know its not my PS pump. But my transmission would only whine when im in a mud hole spinning tires. It doesnt whine when traviling at highway speeds. Oh i almost for got i was in 4hi. If anyone has an idea what could be causing this please let me know! thank you

What does the trans fluid look like? Is it full?

Ever checked the transfer case fluid level and condition?

Trans fulid is fine. It still has the red tint to it. It doesn't smell burnt. I have not checked the transfercase fluid. To be honest I dont know how, or what type of fluid to put in it, im guessing gear oil? I have planned to drain the trans fluid and put brand new in and do that about 4 week in a row. I have been told by many people that when they changed a automatic trans filter that it never shifted right again.

Just do a drain and fill on the trans.

The transfer case takes the same fluid. Dexron/Merc ATF. There are 2 plugs on the back of the transfer case. Top is fill plug and bottom is drain plug. Easy.

Don't wait too long in case the transfer case is low. They don't hold much fluid at all. Make it a priority.

Well, at least CHECK it!!! You'll be flipping a ton more burgers to get a transfer case than some fluid.
