I have a 2001 cherokee 2wd with approximately 1.5"- 2.0" lift. I have an opportunity to buy a set of wheels that are 17X9 and I can get the offset in 4.5 or 5.0 (no spacers) What do you think the largest tire size I can put on with NO MODIFICATIONS to components? Thanks in advance Sandyman

If these are a bad choice for my wheels, what size would work better. I don't mind if they stick out some but I want some tires other than the stock set up that look more aggressive without cutting fenders etc. because it is a 2wd mall crawler

16x8 wheels would be a much better choice IMO.

 

I put 31" (31x10.5r15) tires on stock 15" wheels with a 2" budget lift (installed by PO and was a bit saggy) on the street, no rubbing, no issues. But I ran into issues off road.

 

Can you tell me why please.

Thanks, I now have a 3.5" lift kit from metal cloak and it rides SOOOOOOOO much better than it did with the old crap suspension.

 

17s will look funny on a xj and tire prices are cheaper for a 16 inch rim.

 

Those are probably too wide for any tire that'll fit well for off-road use. 28-29" tires are generally the max for stock/mild lift unless you extend the bumpstops or don't twist it. I have 28" (235/75-15 on stock wheels) and about 1 3/4" lift, my rear stops are toast and it'll rub the inner fenders a bit at full twist, enough that I have balding paint after a few trips. With good stops it would probably be ok, but barely. I also just lightly touch in the front wells, enough to leave shiny spots. I do run it hard for a near stocker. 9" wheels are generally used with 12.50 or wider tires which you won't fit. It sounds like you'd rather do some dirt crawling than mall crawling in your two-by. I'd suggest some aggressive 28 or 29s on your stock wheels (or appropriately sized wheels) and a locker or good limited slip, it'll do relatively well off-road. If you just want blingy wheels and low pro tires then I have no clue.

I'm considering these http://www.summitracing.com/parts/ict-sam-25 for mine. They're light, super deep tread, bias ply aggressiveness, and should fit ok with minimal rub.

 

False, actually. In a 31" ish tire. Most all of the tires I was looking at purchasing were cheaper in the 17" flavor.
I'm currently Running 17" JK Moab's, using wheel adapters of course, with 265/70R17 Yoko Geolandar ATs tires on my MJ. Stock height, front fenders are trimmed. Rears are factory, but I know that the wheel opening is larger than an XJ. Running 31" MTR-K with ZJ Canyon Wheels (same BS as XJ) on my XJ required no trimming in the rear, just longer bump stop in the rear.
New tires, walk-in price was approx 135$ each. The same tires in a 265/75R16 were 15$+ more. Most of the other tires I was considering getting were considerably more for the R16 wheels.
IIRC, even when I looked at 235/85R16 the tires were more money.

For that tire tread width, either rim size, will rub LCA's at/close to full steering lock. A 9" wide wheel, seems a bit extreme though. You will want a min. 10.5" wide tire. Which will require some kind of modification/ bumpstops, trimming, etc.

 

OP has a 2wd and said they are not going to take it off road, so a set of mild A/T tires would be just fine. I really like my hercules tires. They are a good combination of quiet, smooth with just enough aggressive look. I actually take mine off road and they have held up pretty good as well.

haha, did you see some of the pics they put up? couple of them are mine. I got one of the first 3 kits they made available to customers, so I got to help the adjust their instructions and make changes. it rides soooo nice. Rides better on the freeways than my infiniti (infiniti's ride is much harsher than my XJ), and i still feel in control of the vehicle. Both of my brothers at one point had lifted XJs with cheap lifts, and you can just tell when you have a quality lift kit installed. The shocks and rear springs are OME, and the front springs are special dual rates, and the control arms are AWESOME! The ONLY thing I am not thrilled about are the quick disconnects. I think they could throw in a set of JKS disconnects instead of the set they have included. even if they charged an extra $25-40 for the whole kit, it would be worth it. the ones included are just kinda Meh, nothing special, when the rest of the kit is special.

 

On the 16/17" it's just my personal preference. 17" just look too "mall crawler" for me, but you state that's what your rig is, so...?
As far as the 8/9", as already stated the 9" is pretty wide. You'll be forced into a wide tire, which may cause rubbing issues when at full lock, when getting into those tight parking spaces at the mall.

Are you sure they are 4.5-5 offset, or is that the back spacing? Two different measurements.
