Wheel Painting Write-up
Hey guys i decided to return the favor of helping! Im always asking questions which might get annoying seeing "4x4cherokeexj" with a "what is this " how do i fix this". So i will give you my wheel painting guide which was great turn out for me. Maybe even get this in the write ups if it isnt already there.
Supplies-
Painters tape/Masking tape
Sand Blaster/ Cone wire brush
Spray paint *ill describe the paint i used below*
Wheels
Painting surface.
So lets get started!
1. If you already have your wheels with out tires on them, what i did was go to buddys house and i put my wheels in the sandblaster and got to work. Getting it nice and roughed up

1A. Take your Cone wire brush and go around the ENTIRE wheel you dont need to take the paint off completely cause what happens is your get a "low" spot in the paint where the metal shows and that will show when you paint. Just give it a good scuffing up!
This is what i had started with, was some old beat up d windows that i revived.
Look at them enough you see the have some rock rash, so i took a cresent wrench and bent things back and took a grinder to smooth things out. Back to the write up.
2. Take some Windex or some high fast rate dissolving substance. And then wipe down your wheels to make sure no dust/flakes are on the wheel before painting. Reason why to use fast rate dissolving is for you wont get water/liquid in the crack like i did.
3. (optional) I had my tires mounted so they wouldnt mess up my paint job.
4. If you had your tires mounted and you are painting with tire on, take your tape and start to mask around the outside of the wheel. All the way around, take a strip and go over your air valve too.
5. Ok, heres where paint comes in. Most of you guys use spray paint, which is did too. You guys use rustoleum wheel paint mainly from what i see. I dont have experience with it. So i took some "Hammerlite" Glossy type spray. Now why hammerlite?
Hammerlite info- Hammerlite is a 3in1 paint Sorta. 1st part is a primer built into the spray. 2nd is its paint
3rd its like a clear coat type thing to help "protect" the paint but in truth its actually small glass particals bonded when sprayed on the wheel to make a glass hard outer coat which i thought was awesome! Now- Warning: Make sure to get all of your coats done in under an hour or you have to wait 10 days for them to completely dry cause the paint will crack and such so the can says. I wasnt gonna take the chance at 10 bucks a can.
6. Okay so you got your paint, got your wheel taped off.
Shake your can as directed on can its self.
7. When spraying stay a min. of 6inches away to a max of 12inches.
8. The way i did it was in quick strokes. Back and fourth really quick. Start at one end and go to the other back and forth. Think of yourself as a robot when you do it.
9. Now if you do this in a pattern it will be easier, lets number the wheels 1 2 3 4. Start at 1 and go to 2 --->3--->4 that way when you get to 1 it should be ready again for another coat.
10. I put on 5 coats to begin, then i let it dry/tack up. and went back to spraying i did around 11 coats i think. It took me one can of hammerlite.
11. Let dry for about an hour.
12. Go nuts and start installing your wheels and tires!!!

Very good write-up....I already painted my wheels (bedliner), but if it doesn't last the winter, I might use your write-up.

What are these wheels made of? Did they have chrome on them? I have some chrome wheels and I need some ideas on how I can get the peeling outer chrome layer to come off without soda or sandblasting (because I need a cheaper alternative)

The wheels are steel but like poweder coated. I ruffed everything up good and sprayed them. MN i have never tried it on plastics only on metals but it should work fine.
