Default Wheel backspacing question

Hello I have a 97 jeep Cherokee XJ sport upcountry, I just bought 15 x 8 cragar soft 8's with 4 inches of backspacing. I need wheel adapters because the wheels are 5x5.5 bolt pattern. Would a 1" adapter make the wheels stick out too far? I know it's all about preference and I want a wider stance.. Any info or suggestions? Pictures of this setup would help out a lot!
Thank you!

Why would you spend MORE money and add a point of failure instead of just returning the wheels and buying the correct ones in the first place?

Or did you buy these used off of some guy with a CJ?

As for how far the tires stick out being "too far" that's a matter of personal preference, what size tires you run, and what your coverage requirements are IE fender flares

I would sell the rims and buy ones with the right bolt pattern to them.

We'll, I DID buy these used and for a good price. I work for the railroad and am on call 24/7. I was in a hurry and on my way to work when I stopped to pick them up. The guy said they were 4.5 pattern. I've never put spacers or adapters on any vehicle of mine. I was just simply trying to see if I could make these work before I tried to sell them and buy the correct ones. I am new to jeeps and needed opinions or advice. I am going to sell the wheels and buy new ones. Do I dare ask about backspacing? 15x8 31" tires. Upcountry sport cherokee. I would like a wider stance. Maybe 1" passed the fenders. 4" or 4.5" bs?

3.75 seems to be the norm.

I was in the garage earlier doing some measuring. If stock wheels are 5.5"bs and I go with say 4"bs, that would move my wheels out 1.5" correct? Just seemed that the 31x10.5's that are on there now would stick out pretty far. Looked like about an inch and a quarter passed the flares on the rear and a little more up front. I've tried googling some images but figured I would ask on here, and straight from one of you guys.
