In my opinion go with like a 98 or 99 cause you can usually find one for a nice price and then put the extra money into it right away

The 2000 and 2001 had coil packs and tend to crack the cylinder head if you overheat the engine.
If you like the older style then go for the 96. If you like the newer body style then 97-99 would be the best years. 96 was the year with the highest production numbers, might be easier to find.

96 or early 99. Best engines and parts of their respective body styles. Get a 96, get a 99 style intake manifold and some Neon injectors (look up the swap) and you get the best 4.0 engine possible without major mods.

I LOVE my 93 xj, if I would say if money wasnt a factor get a 99 XJ. They used the best intake manifold and heads(most torque output) with updated interior and the smoother front end. You still get a HP dana 30, and thestronger chrysler 29 spline 8.25.
