A narrow tires digs in (down) to find traction, where as a wider tire "floats." What you choose depends on what type of terrain you wheel.
I use super, duper ginormica 235/75/15 Mastercraft Courser M/T's for mixed trail use.

Got 31" mastercraft courser mt's on the xjs. They're good for a dd weekend wheeler. Got 31" treadwright guard dog's on the 'yota also good dd weekend wheeler. Also, just got some 31" bfg km2's that came with a '87 f150 but haven't used them yet. ALSO (I have too many tires....), 31" treadwright wardens. Had them for months but just got them put on and haven't used them yet. Haha.

i run 31X10.50 bfg all terrains right now, i like them for crawling and for the road, not very good for mud. here is what you should look at, if you stay narrow it will not be as good for mud, you will be digging trenches every time you try. the only thing i have found a narrow tire good for is snow. now i personally love my a/t for how much wheeling and how little mudding i do. but if you like to mud a lot i would definitely go fur the bfg mud terrains. i personally prefer the km2 to the km1 but both are great tires. wider tires are better in mud and at crawling, and if you can keep your speed work for floating on snow too.
just my 2cents.

Super Swamper SSR's all the way. I've had them for 2 years now and still love them. Kinda loud on the road but great tires for everything! I run 10.50's cause they tend to dig to solid ground faster. Think about the WWII Jeeps, they ran skinny tires and went through anything.

When I get the money, it's gonna be super swamper radials for me, they make a 31 x 9.5 so I don't have to get spacers or new wheels, I heard they do pretty well in snow for not being a snow tire, which is a big deal for me because the roads in Minnesota are in at least 3 inches of snow for about 6 months...

iv had a few different tires around the years
iv never had bfg a/t's on a 4x4 but on my 2by ranger they worked for whatever i threw at it
i bought i set of wildcat m/t's and they were big fat 33x13.5's and made a huge foot print floated on the mud and had alot of rubber to grab on the rocks but they got cut up fast and wore out really fast
i have a set of the km2's now and they are really nice....besides being pretty expensive...they arent loud on the road they get good traction on the road in all conditions they do great great in the mud and sand and snow and for crawling i havent done much of but i havent had any reason to complain with the km2's

Maxxis Bighorns all the way!! I have 33s now but as soon as they wear out I'm going to get a set of Bighorn 35s. I've had the 33s on for over 3 years now and still have plenty of meat. You will pay a fortune at Les Schawbs for these tires. You can get awesome deals for them by doing a little shopping around online, though.
