I just bought a '96 Cherokee and the previous owner had removed the headliner fabric leaving this hole. What is supposed to go here?

 

The flux capacitor, you'll have trouble getting past 87 mph without it.

 

P.S. Don't mind the homemade roll bar.

 

I have a newer cherokee (99) but it looks like a light or optional soundbar with light.... Just my thoughts

 

Yup, pretty sure that's for the sound bar and rear dome light.

 

I would just go to the Junk Yard and pull a newer style head liner with the integraded sound bar / speaker ports

They got it right, its from the soundbar, cargo light. I have the exact hole due to a broken and missing soundbar. I will eventually install a one piece headliner with integrated soundbar. For now i have that ugly hole too.
