Blue book is still over $6k and if he's had someone else doing all the mods and maintenance he could def have over $20k invested if he's including initial buying price, especially in IL.
Given how low the mileage is on it I wouldn't be shocked at all if he got $10k for it. The mods aside, which realistically do hold some value, with just how clean it is and how good of shape the unibody appears to be in I personally wouldn't take any less than $7500 or so for it. XJs are going up in value while numbers are decreasing and they tend to go for more than blue book anyway.
It's already up to $5200 and the bids always shoot up in the last few minutes on ebay.
