Another fruitless day seeking this part. Over three years scouring the JY's and still have not found one of these plastic rear hatch retainers. It came with our used 2000 XJ.
I know how to refurb the metal ones but this works ridiculously well and should never fail. I have no idea if it was a Jeep dealer add-on/fix or an after market match up.
LOL!!
Far from it. I am not talking about the handle. I have a spare handle on the spare XJ. I guess the idea there is pay 20 for the plastic clip and you get a free handle but it does help me understand this is likely an aftermarket part. ty
That yellow retainer on the control rod is the subject.

So I did not want to start a thread about this but also figured in the Craigslist thread I would not get an answer.
I know '97 is a transition year but could you have a '96 and down steering wheel with a '97 and up dash from the factory?
I have to think that somebody did that.

I have never seen that before, I wouldn't think that is factory.

I did not think so either but that is a '97 and with it being a transition year who knows. LOL.
So about a week ago I tried to eyeball the Mopar trailer hitch I picked up to see how it would play with
my factory gas tank skid and my factory rear tow hooks. Well factory tow hook on the driver's side and took a
second one and had it reconfigured to use on the passenger side. Not really sure why they did not make one for real.
Anyway I could not tell for sure. The only way to find out is to bolt it up. So I wasn't going to refresh it till I knew it would
work but when I bolt it up and if it works do not want to take it back down to refresh it.
So figure do that first. Also if it does not work I will be selling and would give it a quick once over anyway so....
So I have been using the Evap-Rust inside the tubes. This is just the one side.
Before and after.
Now on to the other side.

Looks like it might have been a rural carrier jeep with the aftermarket right hand drive installed. Note the big pully sticking out behind the wheel and missing glovebox area on the passenger side.

I was wondering what the hell that was too.
But I think you figured it out. LOL.
Went to install my 27 spline chromoly axle shafts into my supposed 27 spline ARB carrier and nope, they will not engage with the splines - they just spin freely and I can hear them clanging around. If I wiggle them enough, I can get the inner "spider gear" to turn with the axle shaft, but rotating the carrier does nothing. I even bolted down both shafts with the hubs and the clanging noise was just awful. Zero turning of the shafts when rotating the carrier - just metal-on-metal noise.
It's as if the guy I bought this axle from installed a 30 spline ARB carrier. I even asked him (I bought these MONTHS ago) if he remembered and he doesn't but thinks it's a 30 spline carrier... I tried shining a light down the axle tube and counting the splines but it's very difficult to keep track like that. However, each time I did count, it was more than 27 and usually around 30...
FML. I'm going to go to East Coast Gear Supply and probably beg and pled that I can "borrow" a set of 30 spline inners just to test it. I really can't think of anything else that would be wrong. If that works, then cool - I have a 30 spline carrier but now I need new inner shafts at the least (I already bought brand new 27 spline hubs that I'd like to use).

One day I'll learn my lesson about used parts.
Dayum I hope they let you at least try one to see.
So I finished messing with the Evapo-Rust inside the tubes, the ones that run left to right, on the trailer hitch.
It is cleaned/degreased and Metal Prepped. Going to let it dry really good before I refresh it.
Thinking about squirting some of the Eastwood Internal Frame Coating in the tubes.
I have some lying around from previous projects.
POR 15 the rest. Just going to spot it in the problem areas though with the POR 15.
Not doing the whole hitch.
I might just slosh around some POR 15 in the tubes too and turn it upside down to let the excess pour out.
But not today.
I know how much you guys love my shots of POR 15 drying so stay tuned. LOL.
