Looks like the skid goes between the tank and the straps. I'm going to try and hold the tank in position or close enough that I can lower the straps and slide the skid in to place. That's how I "plan" on tackling it anyways.

Neal is right though... lol Figure on the engine being no good. But you would be surprised how many people "think" they blew an engine and it wasn't actually blown up because they don't really have the knowledge to know for sure what is actually wrong with it. But I wouldn't get any hopes up, he might know.

I didn't have to touch the straps to install my skid, I'm not so sure they have to be undone.

Angry Somebody help!

I have recently bought a 99 XJ Sport 4.0 off a teen that had put in a horrible aftermarket system. I have just spent the last two weeks pulling out the whole interior, headliner and the aftermarket stereo system because when I was vacuuming out the mud that was in the cargo area, I smelled electrical smoke, and sure enough, smoke was coming from the connectors above the rear, passenger side, wheel well. I pulled the panel and saw the tail light wiring harness and tail gate wiring harness had been corroded from water (rust spot on the outside). I decided to cut off the connectors and solder each wire together according to the connectors and diagram. Covered the connections in shrink wrap and that was it. When it started smoking originally, I noticed it had blown the blue fuse in the engine bay, because the radio, lights and gauge cluster all quit. I replaced that fuse and everything worked correctly. I had just redone the headliner and put rhino liner on the whole bottom interior of the XJ and Ive put all the panels back. I went and bought a Pioneer head unit and installed it according to the factory diagrams. (No infinity system). I put in the din, turned on the radio, and all the speakers work (had to fix the door jam broken wires as well). I was excited, then noticed that when I push the brake pedal, it cuts the speakers off. I have to then restart the radio to have the speakers come back on. But once again, pressing the brake pedal will turn them off. I have replaced the brake light switch, I have checked ever fuse in this XJ. I have checked every ground on the entire vehicle. I have cleaned the battery terminals. I made a separate ground for the radio (still no fix). I have then disconnected all the connections by the passenger fuse box to see if it was one of them. I every disconnected the dome lights, the visors and rear door wires. I even switched the power wires on the back of the XJ. I Can Not Find A Solution. Can anyone help!? Sorry for posting on this thread, I'm currently irritated and don't want to fish through other threads.

For some reason I can't see it Earl, But from your description I now know what you are talking about.

Yep, Sounds like a "I want to be a real skid plate when I grow up!". lol

Honestly, myself... unless it is real snug against the tank, I think I would trim that off except about an inch either side of the straps. But if it is good and snug against the tank with no gaps I would probably just leave it alone and slap the plate right over it if it fits.

Just a reminder, the plate goes above the hitch in between the hitch and the frame rails.

Lol... OK now I see it. That might get in your way Earl. But it could be the only "cushion" you have between the metal straps and the tank. If you look at that picture of mine you will see that there is a strip of rubber between the two so that the strap doesn't eat into the tank. It has to have something between them and this token plastic might be all there is, in which case I would trim it off and leave a good strip under just the straps.

They changed the skid plate in 97 and it won't fit older Cherokees I believe. The straps definitely do not have to be touched to install the skid plates though. Definitely do some googling before just trying to jump into it. You have a metal tank which makes me believe you would need an older style skid plate.
