I finished changing my axle u-joints today, and I made a YouTube video of it.

See now this is what I am talking about. Only thing I think Youtube is good for. Instructional videos. Nice and clear. Concise. Never having done this the only thing I wonder is could you have used a socket to remove the caps instead of banging on and bending that metal ring for the short part of the axle where the knurled part goes into the hub assembly?

I've had a helicoil holding my passenger's side front caliper on for a year and a half now. That bolt is just as tight on there as the other one when I loosen them up to remove the calipers.

Thanks, I'm glad you liked the video! I'm sure there is a method that uses a socket. You'd have to keep the socket from going flying with each hit from the hammer but I'm sure there's a way. For me, whacking the thing unceremoniously is just easier. Plus it's a good stress reliever.

So I have not bought any tools lately that I probably don't need. Until today. $80. Looks like it never has been used. No charger but I have one for the impact gun I bought awhile back and it charges both M12 and M18 batteries. So I could not resist. I need help. I really do. LOL.

Score, that'll be handy

I have that as well, use it all the time. Love it. Need to get the extended batteries for my m12 collection I'm trying to build.

I used a socket to replace mine for exactly that reason. Still missed once and banged up the ring. Used a vice, I think, to straighten it back out.

I lay the short end yoke across the edge of an anvil, 1-2 solid blows at the base of the other yoke will free the first side. Open vise up enough so the now exposed arms of the u-joint are resting on top. Another 1-2 solid blows at the base of the other yoke and done. Takes less than 5 mins, no chance of deforming anything.

Get a small press. You'll wonder why you never had one before, haha

I did a little shopping around before I bought that. Trying to determine if $80 was a decent deal. M12 6.0 battery at Amazon is $49. Which compared to many other places, Home Depot was $89, was pretty cheap.

I use my ball joint press to remove them, a lot faster and no use of a hammer needed.
