I was wondering were I could ask questions on this forum? my question being what transfer case is the best for the xj's for a trail and light rock climbing rigg I have a np242 and It might be going out dew to the all wheel drive use the previous owner used alot and not changing the gear oil thanks. And I heard they arnt the same as the other transfer cases when it comes to after market parts.

 

This is where you would ask that question. Some like the 242 but I prefer the fewer parts and better aftermarket support of the 231 as far as stock cases go.

 

The 242 is a great case and it took a lot for me to give it up once i decided to do a 5spd swap, but i no longer daily drive my jeep so i figured it was for the better considering the vast after market support for the 231.

bottom line you have to decide for your personal driving style, some downsides to the 231 to keep in mind are its not friendly for street use as far as turning goes because it doesnt disengage the front shaft like the 242, same goes for tight trails...some people dont like having to shift out of 4WD while cornering on tight trails and some just dont give a crap, however there are ways around this that the aftermarket offers[teraflex 2low kit]

in the end it will depend on your personal preference

thanks for all the info ya i like the idea of all wheel drive for those ****ty diving condition's but ya its my D D so I wanted a good transfer case that's reliable when im of road.
