I don't think that is necessary. Not with '96 and down XJ's. I believe it to work very similar to cargo area glass. The molding being what holds the windshield in.
I could be wrong.
I know '97 and up are actually gunked in. I opted to have the rear hatch done professionally when I swamped out all my glass in my '00 for Privacy Glass.

pretty sure that’s true. While it does install similar to the sides it still may be more difficult but doable

Also to the op some lacquer thinner or acetone will remove that spray paint. Not sure about the hood. If that’s primer that is on there it will likely remove that as well.

I tore the header off today. Gross! First quote $500-$650 from a fancy car interiors shop.

Default Torx

I think the torx size is 1/2 inch? Anyone know? I don’t want to buy a whole set. Should I use something to loosen it bc rust?

Oh hey thanks for the videos, I can totally do this by myself! I guess I’d better get gloves and a Torx set then.

I can save that $500-650 and live with my own handiwork.

That last video really helpful, I see now you are supposed to leave the fiberglass coating in place, and helpful hack to repair broken bits with canvas.

I believe the Torx bit you need is a T-50. That was the size I needed to remove the seat belts in our '00 and '01 XJs when I redid the headliners.
