And thats if you have a 2000....
Just think if you have an '89 like some of us do....with the original engine.
I know Ide get alot of my power & MPGs back if I regeared....but replacing the starter in my car, is cheaper and gets better mpg's still, so Im go with fixing my car first, thus saving money where I can first.
THEN hopefully, this summer I will have enough to regear.

In the summer of 2010 I purchased a 1998 with 137,000 original miles for $2,000. I realize that is twice as much you are looking to pay but its a fair price from my perspective. So far I've replaced the exhaust from the cat back, the heater core and hoses, radiator and hoses, water pump, thermostat, belt, front brake calipers, rotors, pads, brake lines. On top of that, a cheap 3" lift with leaf packs and 31" mt tires. Its hard to justify spending all that money on an old vehicle that gets such bad mpg. I have another vehicle that gets 30mpg. The xj is a toy, I wouldn't own it as my only vehicle.

I felt really guilty for stalking this guy after spotting his Cherokee on the road (and yes, we waved). His is a very clean 2000 Classic and mine is equally clean a 1999 Limited. I followed him into the HD lot and waited for him to go into the store then parked mine beside his just so I could take this photo. I was still ogling it when he came out. We met-up again at the nearby park later in the week. I confessed to stalking his ride locally then showed him the pic. After we talked for awhile I started picking his brains about his and we swapped info and such. He didn't know or care about the Forum (tsk, tsk). I've since let him know my intentions and he told me he was thinking about selling it - TO ME! We haven't talked price yet but I'll cough-up more than book value for this puppy.

I heard that "ka-ching" sound come out of nowhere and saw the dollar signs roll in his eyeballs (just like in the cartoons) at the same time we were talking about it. It will not be cheap but it'll be worth every penny.
