I just busted up my steel winch cable so its time to upgrade to synthetic. Im looking for any recommendations its going on a Warn M8000 winch. Pros cons would also help thanks guys.

Amsteel blue makes great winch lines.

Master pull is a name you see a lot.

Is masterpull using amsteel?? There websites are almost identical only thing different is $$

I looked at amsteel site every rope in the pictures says master pull on it so it probably is same thing.So which ever is cheaper go for it.

im pretty sure most syn rope is the same, just buy it from a reputable place and make sure its name brand. i have trail gear rope.

I considered synthetic rope, but thinking back on it, I'm happy I went to steel for my uses.

I'm in Florida, so the sun is a problem. The UV would weaken the synthetic rope over a short period of time.

On the other hand, it is much, MUCH safer. Just expensive.

There's not really a benefit to one brand over another. Just look for a good load range and good price. Make sure the two factors align at the most efficient point.

All decent synthetic ropes are uv treated so the sun won't damage them. I keep a 15" chafe sleeve at the end of my rope so when it is spoiled in you can't see the rope at all.

I think, though, that even though they're treated, they're not UV proof.

The general rule of thumb here is to replace the rope once a year for safety. So I've heard. Seems costly.

My rope has been fine for 2 years I have a buddy that's still using the the same rope that has been on his warn 9.5ti for 6 years

Much of this could vary depending on the conditions of your state. Florida is much hotter than other places being that it's closer to the equator.

Another thing we should think about is that just because the rope has sat on a winch for 6 years, doesn't mean that it has the same strength as the day you bought it. It will deteriorate over time from UV, weather, and other things.

Some winches have better line housings that help prevent light and weather from getting to it. Some cheaper winches are also more exposed.

(Not hating on synthetic, but OP did ask for pros and cons)

As for steel, light isn't much of a problem.

But it is vulnerable to weather, abrasion, and kinking.

Theres a local guy with bulk amsteel that makes fish nets. Im gonna swing buy and see what hes got and if he can make me a 100' winch rope. I'll keep this updated with the price and if it's a good deal.

By the way thanks for the pros and cons. Of the conversation. Im up in alaska so its not too hot and the suns only around 6 months out of the year. Im also thinking if running a longer chafe guard to help protect from UV rays.
