97'
2years
15k miles
T-stat: $20
Water pump:$45
New belt:$20
Transfer case chain:$65
Radiator cap:$12
Total:$162
Cents per mile:$0.0108 a mile

I don't count the usual maintence stuff as that goes with any vehicle. But if it makes people happy if say to add about $75-$95 more lol

I also spent a lot of time searching for a base model(less electrical issues) and in fairly good condition

Hmm I have maybe $3500 total in this xj so far. (purchase price and all) I have put about 12k miles on it in 10 months. But I personally do not believe that cost per mile is a fair way to judge its value. Just this morning I was out playing with it in our latest snowstorm. (see my sig) Now my jeep is mostly stock (for now). BUT the list of suitable apples to apples comparisons is much shorter if what it is able to do when play time rolls around is taken into account. If your vehicle does double duty as a weekend play toy then that should somehow be factored into the equation.
just my .02

What would a round of golf, 18 holes, cost per week?

Depends on the course. I get your point though. I never complain about what I have in my xj because it provides me with so much fun. Some people spend money on their photography hobby, I spend mine on my jeep addiction. The friends I've made, the good times I've had, the stories I have can't have a dollar amount slapped on them.

i totaled items I had to replace in order to operate the vehicle thus far. I have done scheduled maintenance, but nothing out of the norm. i don't think tires should be included in this cost, as they are an item chosen totally on intended use vs a repair required to get you back and forth to work. with that being said, my jeep was a state owned vehicle and had almost brand new tires on it when i bought it. by default i feel like those are unfair advantages with regard to reliability. as we all know, some jeep owners have no business owning or repairing/modifying them.

it would be easier to total hours invested in my jeep by the week. I'm meticulous and quite **** about anything mechanical, especially on my vehicles.

I figured it like I always did with a race car, the first 10-15 yrs I kept receipts for everything. Then I figured them up for the last year when finished I burnt everything.

I only paid $1800 for the XJ and then it started over again with the receipts thing. Once I hit the $8k mark I threw them away also its a hobby and my "Wife" very important that she and I enjoy it together. We load up food, guns, fuel and head out, in 2 weeks we are planning to pull the XJ behind the Motor Home and head out for a week or 2. With all the dogs I guess going.

It sounds like he went to town replacing a ton of stuff.
It also sounds like he got a rusty Jeep that required major welding repairs.

I would not consider this as typical of the XJ ownership costs.

The majority of those he listed were just standard upkeep items that require service on a regular basis.

I did about all of them when I got mine because I didn't know the last time they were done and others that required attention.

Had mine since the beginning of 2011, so far spent about $10,000 on mods and service

Custom Mods $3,409
Service $6,029

probably spent more but this is where i'm at... somehow i think that is high.

Bought it with 98,000 miles, driven about 21k miles. So at around 120,000 miles.

1999 Jeep Cherokee Classic $1800
4.0 liters of beef (now 4.5L stroker $2200)
AW4
3.55 geared Hp 30/8.25
Spartan locked Dana 30(Amazon.com) $255
Unknown rail mount rack $(came with jeep)
Window vent shades (Ebay)$40
K/N air filter $50
16x8 4.25 bs (cl) ion rims $130
3.5" lift (cl) coil springs $30(now rubicon express 4.5 coils $80 and cso33rb ome leafs $265)
1" coil spacer(Ebay) $20
JK (ebay) shocks $40 (now cheap white body shocks $50)
V8 ZJ tie rod $85
285/75-16 x5 (cl) BFG KM2's $220(now 315/75/16 BFG KM2's$150)
Front rugged ridge formed floor mats (Quadratrec.com) $60
1/4" thick black rubber mat for cargo are $Free
Shackle relocation kit and front doors (cherokeeForum find) to make half doors from $150
Bastard pack $Free
Raised stock flares and used heavy duty zip ties to hold on better $Free
Pioneer deck (WalFart) $109
2.5" Rear shock extensions $Free
New radiator $55 new one
grand cherokee clutch fan $35
Napier flat flares $300
Replaced hood $50
Replacement doors $70
Replacement Dr fender $50
Fixed AC compressor $142 accumulator $38 refrigerant $40 oil $8 =$228 total
Overhead console free

$6522 total invested. Now I'm sure if you add every sensor that's new on my motor that's another $400 at least lol and I'm sure that's not all I've replaced

Only maintenence is brakes and oil changes. I spend most my xj budget on upgrades. Most reliable rig I've owned. 218k on everything but the stroker. Stroker is coming up on 5k miles.

No way would I have a car payment knowing how to fix, maintenance, and upgrade rigs. I've had over 30 vehicles starting at age 14 till now (31) and jeeps are the only newer rigs I've owned and wouldn't have it any other way.

The more you know and the more you learn the cheaper the Hobbie gets. You learn on your first build and then start another and save so much from knowing it's a waste to do t-case drops, blocks, add a leafs, rough country products, etc.

Every vehicle has maintenance so I don't think it's worth counting. Figure a car payment and full coverage plus maintenence on a new or newer car and cherokee wins out every time in my mind.

do you have a review and overview of your stroker engine install? Would love to do that someday if the jeep doesn't end up as a rust bucket.
