Default transmission cooler

I noticed that the top metal line connecting to the radiator is severely bent almost to a 90 and is definitely restricting the to the tranny. I read that both hoses are high pressure so fixing it is out. Is it a pain to replace.

You can cut out that bad portion and use some pressure rated rubber hose with hose clamps.

Many of us that run aux trans coolers use rubber hose with no issues.

I just recommend you cover the trans line an inch or so and use a couple hose clamps since there isn't going to be a barb on the line.

Is 3/8 heater hose strong enough for a high press trans return line?

I would think not.
3/8 fuel injection hose would.

I wouldn't recommend either, both could likely handle the pressure (the cooler lines are only around 20-30 psi, though internal transmission pressures can reach up to around 300 psi) but neither is designed to handle hot fluid with strong solvents in it. The fuel-hose is designed to handle the solvents but not the heat, the heater hoses is designed to handle the heat but not the solvents/detergents in trans fluid.

Get hose that is rated for oil/trans fluid, you should be able to find it at any auto-parts store (Advance definitely carries it, with the AUX coolers, I would imagine most other stores should have it to). It will hold up better in the long term, heater or fuel hose will likely start to come apart from the inside out, both leading to leaks and contaminating the fluid with rubber bits.
