transfer case?
i got my 97 cherokee 6 months ago and never really bothered with the part time four wheel drive. when i did use it -on two occasions- it always took a while to get out of four wheel drive i assumed this was a normal thing but after a heavy snow i turned it on and after shutting it off and heading home i realized it still wasnt off. it has been on now for several days and i have no choice but to drive with it on normal roads. i have tried the backup and switch to drive technique and nothing i am thinking of taking a look at the transfer case lever to see if it is not all the way into 2WD under the car but i have very little technical skills when it comes to this.
Any suggestions?

Sounds like you might have a slipped fork.
The transfer case is actually pretty simple to pull apart if you have any mechanical ability at all.
If you can't do it, pull the front drive shaft till you can get it fixed.
