Trade XJ for YJ??
i know what you're all thinking...."This is blasphemy!! Trading an XJ for a YJ...that's criminal!!" but please, bear with me.
So, i found a YJ i want, but it's been rolled. It needs a new windshield & frame, top, drivers-side door, and maybe a rollbar. I was thinking of trading the guy my XJ for it... here's the specs on the two jeeps, lemme know if you think it would be a fair trade as-is, or if i should finish my XJ first.
My XJ:
1988
166K
4.0L I6 (rebuilt, no receipts)
Auto
Stock Axles
Bald 33's
4" lift
Trimmed Fenders
custom rear bumper w/ recovery points
custom welded-on roof rack
various body bumps and bruises
2 speaker sound system
Currently not running due to: fan went through radiator. Have replacement radiator, fan, and fan clutch, but need to install new studs on fan pulley before it can all be put together. Also comes with new, uninstalled, tie rods, front hub assembly, spare set of 31's, new front seats.
His YJ:
1988
Mileage not listed
5 speed
4.0L I6
At least 4" lift, 33" tires.
Decent body (minus drivers front fender)
Looks to be in overall good condition
Here's a link to his ad:

I'm seriously considering this...I found a guy parting out his 92 YJ, and his prices are very reasonable. If i can't trade him, you think i can talk him down to $3000? I think i could get almost that much for my XJ...

i don't have a lot of time to explain but looking at yours then looking at his. There is no way i would do it. Have you priced all the parts you would need if the parts jeep doesn't go thru. Also i have heard out of all the wranglers to get, don't get the YJ. Has this thing had anymore upgrades besides a 4 inch lift with tires. Plus are you sure thats all that was damaged on the roll over? like frame and front left fender. There is most likely more. keep us updated. Good looking XJ by the way

I'm definitely gonna check it out before i commit to anything. ANd i'm probably going to call the guy with the parts jeep too and make sure he'll have at least the windshield and frame. That's all I'd need to make it driveable, assuming the frame is still good. I can live without a top and doors for the summer and save for them. Or just borrow a top from a buddy that has about 3 tops for every wrangler-style jeep ever made (i.e. cj5, cj7, yj, tj, even a top for a JK, and he only has a TJ!)
Thanks for taking the time to reply! My jeep is not prefect by any means, it's got leaks out the wahzoo, and some trouble at speeds over 35 in 4x4. (hence the new hub assembly.) and the PO painted it black DIRECTLY OVER the red paint. no primer, nothing. and it shows.

a good thing in the wrangler ad is it has a new weber carb. thats means its a 38/38 which is about 400 bucks to have to buy yourself. but there is no way i would trade for a rolled wrangler.

I'm afraid ive got to get rid of the xj... The time has come that I need something better on gas. I was gonna get the yj and fix it, then sell it for another xj and a motorcycle or econo car. Still, yjs go for a lot around Colorado, especially lifted. Everyone wants a 4x4 here!!

That's more than I paid for my YJ and it's not rolled and has a hard top. On the plus side it has a shackle reversal which I don't care for but can be a good selling point and they ride better on the street. Fender looks a bit crinkled as well.

The YJ was never going to be long-term, just something to fix up and sell for some profit, i know they get just as good MPG as an XJ would. but ya'll pretty much made me rethink this, so it's a no-go on the YJ.
