Hey everyone. I've searched (scrolled thru all the treads) on this and didn't really see any one touch base on this and was looking for some insight.
How many people have their spare tire on their roof rack? I put mine up there this weekend and started to think that it would get dry rotted rather fast with the sun beating down on it all day long.
I guess my questions are who has their spare up on the rack and what do you do/use to stop the dry rott?
Thanks

I have mine on my roof rack and dont have anything covering it, it doesnt seem to have dry rot at all, but thats probably cause of where i live.... but if i were you i would just put a spare tire cover over it.
covers will make them rot faster. best bet is to spary with with aero space 409 or something like that with UV protection in it. or better yet keep it in the rig as weigh up high is not a good thing
My full size spare stays in the back of the XJ until I need the space, then its up on the roof. I don't think you will have too much trouble with it as long as you maintain it as mentioned. Its not much different from the SUVs that carry them on the back.

Never heard of that....guess if you live some place thats cold dark and wet all the time it could rot it.I have never had a issue here in the south with a cover.I would spray it and use a cover if it was outside all the time the sun WILL bake it

Mines inside now no cover,no protectant, no problem. My experience with it on the roof was that it started cracking.

Thanks for all the great feed back. I use to have the tire mounted in the jeep but just running out of room. I put it on the rack due to the fact that I have speakers back there and I was going to build a custom box for my 3 subs. With the speakers back there and my tools, safety stuff and rescue supplies I kinda am running low on room back there. Not to mention the few trips I will make to the market or when I have to bring supplies to work. I'm goin to try almost everything mentioned. Do you think it would be bad if I sprayed it with the 409 and then put a cover over it? I use to have a full size bronco with the swing on the back and it got rather rotted. All of this is more so temp until I build my rear bumper with the tire carrier but the gf and I are in the middle of buying a house so I prob won't get to work on the rear bumper until next winter.
Thanks for all the replys!
