Tips needed for 2001 Cherokee Sport purchase
I've owned a 1989 in the past, and it was a bulletproof monster, for the most part, but am just about to buy a 2001 automatic 6cyl 4wd w/150,000 on the odo. The only thing that ever went out on that my 89 was the water pump, which was a snap to replace.
My questions are:
A. Are there any classic weak spots or critical wear out areas that I should be aware of in a 2001 at that level of mileage?
B. This won't be for hardcore rock hopping, but rather for getting up to the Bristlecone Pines in the White Mountains, places like Laurel Canyon by Mammoth, Coyote Flats, etc... Established fire roads and maintained trails in the Eastern Sierra/Owens Valley region for photography and hunting/fishing purposes.
What basic mods from straight stock would be the best bang for the buck, ala AT tires, maybe a skid plate, different shocks/springs, etc....
Thanks in advance for any advice you can offer.

The heads on the 2000 and 2001 models are prone to failure. Do a search, there's lots of threads covering this topic. Most people recommend staying away from anything later than 1999. Also the low pinion dana 30 front is less than ideal if you plan on lifting it

I agree with Kelso the heads are prone to cracking if they over heat. Also the Dana 30 LP is less desirable other than that there nice jeeps for the year minus the head and the front axle

While they are prone to cracking, they don't always. Search the forums, but there is a thread showing the majority of people have not had a head crack. Mine hasn't. Keep an eye on it and know that it's something to watch for but don't let that stop you.
I'd honestly say the axle is a bigger concern if you're planning on going nuts wheeling it.

That's just it: I'm NOT planning on going nuts with it. It's just reliable transport on fire roads and established 4wd trails in the Eastern Sierra and Death Valley areas.
Any ideas on what the largest AT tires are that I can use w/out having to lift or fender trim?
I've heard that 31x12.50-15 can just be slapped on w/no problem, but this is so far out of my area of knowledge.
Thanks again!

As for what you are planning I would consider a 3-3.5" lift with 31's. Gears and differentials would be something to consider also in the future. Then it's bumpers, armor, and all the other fun things.
