I'd look into a Ford Escort ZX2, a buddy of mine has one, got it for $300 with a broken timing belt, and fixed it for the cost of the belt in about an hour. Plus he gets 35mpg twisting it at 7000rpm all day, and it's a quick little thing, not a hot rod by any means, but it's faster than anything I've ever owned. I've thought about getting one myself

Yep--don't be looking at an XJ for a typical commuter vehicle, for sure! My XJ is merely a toy, my new hobby, and my weekend wheeler (once I get it built up to my satisfaction).

My DD is a 1990 Mazda 626LX 2.2L 4-banger. I get about 25mpg on that, and 15mpg on the Jeep. Fairly easy car to work on too, which is something I look for in a vehicle, and why I won't buy any of this new junk that's out there.

Anybody who is thinking of buying an XJ hoping it will get good MPG needs medical attention. As has been mentioned, get a Civic or a Corolla. XJ's are not kind to the wallet.

Actually mine got 17 mixed... I was pretty happy coming from a 12mpg full size truck.... but of course my truck's engine didn't blow up.

I get about 18 on the highway downhill with a tailwind, and about 14-15 in the city, which is bearable, but not extremely awesome

I came from a 2000 s10 blazer with about 17mpg highway.. I'll gladly take 15mpg in a jeep.. I've not drove mine enough to know yet..

XJs are nice offroaders for gas but they are not nice DDs. You can get 20 averaged if EVERYTHING is top shape and you drive a stick properly.

I've always liked the idea of a little diesel commuter. Can pick up a 90s Jetta TDI for cheap here that won't sludge up on WMO or WVO mixes

I get 22 average highway but that's all I do is highway... Anyways my engine is pretty cruddy but I still get about 22-24 as long as I don't have a heavy foot... Then again I use the miles driven divided by fuel added so Idk maybe it is only 20 but I'd rather think 22 lol

i thought about it some more. i dont REALLY have the space for another vehicle. its already a stretch with my ZJ, my moms patriot, my dads cruze, and my dads 1969 grand prix (2 car garage, grand prix is in the garage, too much stuff to fit another car. ZJ and patriot in the driveway, dad parks on the street)

im just gonna need to learn to drive the ZJ like a grandma.
16 years old, just got my license, v8 power, not a good mix for fuel economy

My 89 gets 20mpg and has 250k n original engine and trans. Aftr changing the O2 sensor I saw a great improvement.

I too would rather pay a bit more in gas than drive some little zippy foreign go-cart.
