Post Thinking of getting an XJ

so ive been thinking about having an XJ as my first car and was wondering a few things
1 how much maintenance do they need?
2 do the back seats fold down?
3 do the 2 doors have back seats?
4 how reliable are they?
5 what do you like best about yours?
6 how good is the mpg?
help is thanked!

1. A fair bit of maintenance, but not bad. Keep up with regular fluid, hose, and filter changes and it'll last you over 300K miles.
2. Yes, the back seats fold down.
3. Yeah, the 2 doors have back seats.
4. Like I said, keep up with your maintenance, and they'll just keep going...
5. You know, driving a tank is always a blast!
6. Depending on the engine/tranny combo and year, you're probably looking at anywhere from 13- 23MPG I'd guess. I've got 33's on stock axles with a rebuilt 4.0 and auto tranny w/4x4, and I'm getting about 13 city, 17 Hwy.

Just do your homework before you buy, take a look at a couple to see what options/style you want, and buy one. You wont regret it.

1 how much maintenance do they need? No more no less than any 10 year to 28 year old vehicle would.
2 do the back seats fold down? Yes
3 do the 2 doors have back seats? Yes
4 how reliable are they? Depends on question #1, if they are maintaned, they can get 300,000 miles easy.
5 what do you like best about yours? Wheels like a Wrangler with the room of a Grand Cherokee.
6 how good is the mpg? If you have to ask, the XJ is not for you. the average is 12-15 mpg, there are some that get in the 20s but that is rare.

I believe a XJ is a good first car. Although it is NOT a car it is a JEEP. They are easy to maintain, pretty basic mechanically. Good for the begginer to learn on, very few reasons to have to take it to a shop for repairs. They do require maintenance, they are after all OLD. They don't get very good MPG. If you mod them both the maintenance cost and time will go up and the MPG will go down. If you take care of them they will take care of you. I'm on my 5th Jeep, CJ, TJ, 2-ZJ and now XJ. The XJ is my favorite.

x2. if i could turn back time, i would get an xj as my first jeep. they really are easy to work on & parts are definitely cheap. you have to have a lot of patience when working on them.

wheel it. haha My favorite i've done to it in terms of mods would be the 4 inch lift and 33's. I've also got a side-exit exhaust. Put em together and I attract a lot of attention! just gotta lay off the throttle around the coppers...

XJ and fast DO NOT go together, SCARE-RY. That said, I have had mine well over 100, but it rarely goes over 70 and spends a good deal of time crawling around at less than 20. Most fun is at speeds less than 20.

ya i know i shouldn't drive like that but oh well

as far as getting a Cherokee, its my first car, and let me tell you it grows on you, soon enough you'll want to put everything you have into your jeep.

another bonus is that you'll be able to beet little ricers and stuff up to highway speed, or close to it
