If they ever do it will be nothing like it and probably really be a liberty made slightly more boxy.

with the introduction of the 4 door wrangler unlimited I really doubt there will be any chance of a re-birth of the XJ. But i must say, when I get the money a 4 door rubicon will be in the plan.

Back in the early '80s, Toyota had a 2 door coupe (AE86) that ran from '84 to '87. It was a front engine, rear drive, 2 door with 2 option packages, the SR-5 and the GT-S, the latter becoming a cult car used now in major Drifting events world wide. The GT-S, equipped with a 1.6L EFI DOHC motor, 5 speed, and a solid rear axle with LSD and disc brakes. VERY fun car to drive. I owned 3 before I got my Jeep. Since production of the AE86 ended in 1987, there have been war crys and petitions from '86 lovers across the globe to bring back that platform. Well, its happened to a degree. Toyota announced that it is going to offer a font engine , rear drive 2 door that will "go back to the days of the AE86" So it can happen. Will they ever produce another XJ, probably not, but another platform with modern safety and classic Jeep CHEROKEE ABILITY, this could very well happen. XJ owners just need to speak up and make their voices heard. Granted it took Toyota over 2 decades to get the hint but that was all about form, not function.

If they brought the "Cherokee" back they would do it the same way they're bringing the "Grand Wagoneer" back: IFS, Street tires, same platform as two other vehicles. It would hurt too much.

I would think if they remake the Cherokee they should make it have a 4 link independent suspension hey
