Default switching to 4 wheel

Should you leave it in drive or put it in neutral wich is best?

Well, I can tell you what I know about my transfer case. Its the NP231, which means while in drive and in motion I can switch to 4-HI if I'm not giving it too much gas or going too fast. (That would just cause damage.) But to get to four low, I put my transmission in neutral while I'm at a stop, then pull the lever to 4-HI, then through N on the transfer case, and into 4-LO. Hope this helps.
