Keep them connected on the road.
Disconnecting at the trailhead is a great way to improve your axle articulation.

You should just go ahead and remove and trash your rear, and make some home-made disconnects for your front. Will make a worlds difference.

Yep a huge difference off roading. So much I trashed both front and rear swaybars and said never again.

I removed the rear at stock height and flexed it. this trashed all my contol arm bushings. I couldnt feel any difference at stock height but you might be able to feel it if you're lifted. not sure what your setup is but it's something to be aware of

now I'm at 4.5" and no sway bars and have so little body roll it's almost frustrating

No body roll at 4.5 and no sway bars? How?

very stiff shocks. it takes turns just like a stock jeep would and handles like a stock jeep on the freeway. not a hint of DW either. sway bars are truly unneccesary if you set it up right

That is how I feel.

To go wheeling this last weekend I had a 2.5hr drive one way through the back twisties. It railed the corners just fine, was a nice ride actually. No sway bars.

I was driving mine around town testing it's boundaries and I took one corner a little too fast. My back tires break loose and start to slide out before I feel a scary amount of body roll. I actually feel safer driving it now than I did when it was stock. Older XJ's seem to get a little squirrelly on the freeway. I am fully confident that I would be fine in an accident avoidance situation
