This has been bugging me for a while and I thought I'd post to see if anyone is having the same issue or what it could be.

Whenever I full lock the steering and drive (in a car park for instance) the wheels seem to slip (front and back)


Anyone know what I mean !!

first and probably the most simple question, is it in 4hi when this happens?

if not, i could be one of many things. mine does this too.
it could be a wheel bearing or both, ball joint or more, tie rod end, alignment...

i would suspect a wheel bearing or ball joint tho. you could check them with help from someone sitting inside the jeep wiggling the steering wheel.

to check the ball joints and wheel bearings, lift the front end and grab the wheel at 3 and 9 to see if there is any play in the wheel bearing.
then using a bar/jack handle or the like, put that under the wheel and lift up hard to see if there is any play in the ball joints.


or just take it to an alignment shop, they'll check it for free.

Just did a lift and haven't had the alignment done yet but it was doing it before !!

thanks for your help lads, what parts do I need for a 1999 Jeep Cherokee Limited 4.0. I'm in England so sourcing parts isn't the easiest and a lot of research is required. Any links to sites would be great for the following:

wheel bearing
ball joint
tie rod en

 

I was doing some more car park roundabouts (does it make anyone esle really dizzy). Results are:

Full Time 2 Wheel Drive - Hardly slippage.
Part Time 4 Wheel Drive - Front Wheels feel like they are skidding (like when you brake to fast on full lock in snow)
Full TIme 4 WHeel Drive - Didn't drive it with full lock in car park but on a long straight it was making some high pitched revvvy noise

What could be wrong

 

You're doing it wrong!! It's an easy mistake but Full Time means "can be used all the time" whereas Part Time means "Can only be used some of the time".
4WD part time is for slippy conditions ONLY. When you turn corners the front wheels travel a different distance to the rear wheels. If you do this with the centre diff locked up (4 Part Time, 4 LO) you'll get "skip" and also damage your transfer case.

Lets concentrate on what is happening in 2WD and 4FT, you should be able to turn at full lock on tarmac without any problems with the transfer case in those positions.

I haven't done any turning on tarmac in PT 4wd or 4wd LO


Previous owner may have - could this be damaged from before and be the cause of the slipping !!

Well it's possible, but hard to diagnose over the internet. Do you have a decent jeep friendly garage nearby?

 

posi , open dif ? we just sold lincoln navigator AWD and it was wierd when turning sharp corners.. felt like one front ,one rear tire trying to break lose..

 

I'm trying to get as many ideas for my mechanic as pos, he's very good but doesn't know the XJ like the back of his hand and the dealers who do are a rip off !!
