Default Starting problem

Hi All first timer, Ive got a 2005 2.8crd cherokee jeep had it for 10months now but as the colder wheather came ive started having trouble starting the thing on a morning takes about 10+ seconds to get going then it fine for the rest of the day, My first instinct was the glow plugs so had those changed and still no start , then the mechanic said he thought it was turning over slow so i had a new battery fitted as specified (12v 50ah 800amp) by jeep still no start, also tried clamping the fuel line by filter to stop drain back and still didnt start, the only thing i can think of know is the fuel filter housing which ive heard can play up , Any one got any ideas or had the same sort of problems as im pulling my hair out now Please HELP PLEASE

IF its not to hard to get to, check the glow plug relay, I would also make sure that the glow plugs are actually getting power.
If its turning over slow, maybe the starter is getting worn, the bushings wear and armature will start scraping the fields and cause it to be slower.
This can be checked with a simple load test of the starter to see how many amps it drawing.

I've never worked on a diesel XJ, so its just a guess here.
But I wonder if you could manually activate the glowplugs by applying 12v to the solenoid for say 15 seconds then try starting it.
I would also say that the battery you mentioned is seriously undersized for diesel, with starter and added load for glowplugs.
I would go for the biggest battery that will fit in the tray, even a commercial 1000cca truck battery if it will fit.
There is just starting to be some Lithium car batteries coming on the market, this will really up the ante in the starting and other needs like winches etc.

I dont know about manually activating the glow plug the hardest thing is getting at them , I have replaced my battery with 12v 50ah 1000 with 815 crankover what jeep recommended, im having the glow plugs and relay voltage checked monday-tuesday hope that can shed some light on the matters although he said he checked them when he fitted them 3 weeks ago

Default Starting problem still

Still wont start first thing in a morning turns over for abut 10 seconds then starts, glow plugs have been change as said before, and a new powerful battery and still doesnt start as the sun was out today i decided to do some checks, got one of the old glow plugs which i knew worked and placed them in the glow plug wire connectors one by one and turned the ignition on and they all worked fine and timed out to the relay , so im know thinking fueling problem ive clamped the fuel pipe before the filter to stop any drain back over night but still the same sort of start time any idea were to start now folks ?

yea def check your fuel pressure and see whats going on, im not sure if you can check diesel pressure like we can on a gas engine but its either glow plugs air or fuel for those diesels good luck!

Default Same Problem

Hi,

I am having a similar starting problem on my 2004 2.5TD.

Had jeep dealer take a look which was a waste of time and money!

Did you ever get to the bottom of it?

Thanks

Default Cherokee CRD starting problem.

It seems that you may have exhausted the obvious, but have you thought of the injectors. I had a similar problem recently, and having done a few of the obvious checks invested £6.00 in a bottle of Wins Injector Cleaner. After a tank refill - to stir it up, I left it overnight to confirm the poor start conditions and have had no starting problems since then.
If there is a glowplug problem the engine management lamp will be on after the engine starts.
