Starting my DIY paint.
You may be able to see in my pic that my XJ is a few different colors (thanks to the PO). I started by giving it a good wash and a wet sand(300 grit I think) . Wiped everything down and then sanded it down again dry with 180, after removing the pinstripe. I taped everything off and gray primed the entire Hood passenger side, and lift gate. Doing the driver side this weekend. Pics and updates soon to come. Thinking either Italian olive or a dark green with the door crease down and flares rhino lined.

Oops haha, save that for next time then. I have everything primed except for the roof and started with the tan

I was going to do a DIY paint job on my XJ. Then decided to just bedline the rocker panels. Starting that... Sometime soon. Weather hasn't been working in my favor.

yea ive never painted over factory paint before. i plan on painting mine soon so i was going to wash it, use red pads to scuff it up then tack rag to get all the dust off then self etching primer, a few coats of spray can, then maybe 2 coats of clear. its a daily jeep but also a toy. dont care if it gets scratched just figure id try to do a decent job. does that sound like it would work well??

I am a custom painter here in Arizona. Let me give you some advise. I suggest that you wetsand it with 320 or 400 grit. Remember that Scotchbrite pads are good, but the red pads are equivalent to 180 grit, and grey pads are 320 grit. Wetsanding makes the final product look better. Good luck on your project.
I dont expect for you to put as much into yours.... as I did.
Here is 40 hours of wetsanding on mine. Then I will show you the final product.
(P.S. This is also my daily driver)
Here is the completed paint job out wheeling here in Arizona

yes that is the proper way to rattle can a jeep^^
I'll be doing a 1 stage job on my own xj when the time comes. no clear even
be careful with the clear coat in a can. it festers and bubbles very easily when sprayed over even slightly wet color coat
make sure the color coat is dry

I let it sit over night and want to finish it this week, not sure if I want to clear over the tan/beige I chose to use.
