got it fixed i cut the plate between the bell housing and the motor just to butt the starter up straight to the bell housing! that fixed the crazy noise and i got the muffler in and it made a worl of a difference it starts alotttttt easier...

Sorry to bring up an older thread but I am having a noise on cranking too. I just replaced a cracked flexplate and have been trying to solve the noise. I read somethings on here about the bolts being an issue and tried to change bolts with no change. Why did you have to cut the AL plate away? Was the starter gear not extending far enough or was it rubbing on the plate? Any insight would be great.
