Spare tire on top of the XJ..
You know I always thought it was cool looking to have the spare on top of the XJ. That and having a spare when wheeling is always a plus!
So I mounted my 33" (at the time) on top my XJ with a gutter mount carrier. Nice and strong set up, but man was that spare a heavy SOB to get up there and mounted down. I was like "who in the heck wants to get this down when they have a flat"! Oh well, my thinking went as to how many times would you need it? Not like it's something that gets taken down all the time..
Well all was fine until that one morning before work at 4am on a Friday that I decided to pull the XJ in the garage. Get it ready for the new rad, water pump, thermostat and hoses. Still sleepy eyed and all that, I jumped in the heep, fired her up and what do you know. I ran that spare right into my house!! Still a little out of it at the time, I was like what? The heep isn't moving!! So what do I do, yep, give her more gas. still not moving and then it hit me!! The spare tire was hitting the house!! Backed her out and the carrier had pulled the gutter on both sides apart.
I mean rolled them babies open like a can of sardines! So I am like, get this thing off now before the wife comes out and sees this!
So there I am at 4am in the morning, heart a racing pulling that dang heavy **** spare tire off along with the mount, well it was hanging on by a thread so it didn't take much to get off!!
So a lesson learned for me..I bought a rear bumper with the tire carrier so I don't go through this again!!

Reminds me of when the boss drove the hi-lo thru the garage door after the cage on the lift snagged the emergency release for the door. He handles the big dollar screw ups.

I didn't get any pictures. At 4am in the morning and you just ran your XJ's spare tire into your house and your wife works at the same place you do so she is up also. Once you wake up and realize what just happened, knowing you have to react quickly. Pictures is the last thing on your mind.
Luckily for me, we have stone around our garage doors so there was no damage to the house. Just a nice black tire print on the white boarder stone around the garage doors that the wifey never noticed. Even to this day she doesn't know that I done that. Once I removed the tire and the mount, I pulled it in the garage and got to work (quickly) on the drip rails.
Rolled them back and pinched the roof back into them and rolled them back over. Being in the roofing business back in my younger days, I still have a lot of the metal roofing tools in my toolbox so they came in handy for the repair!
