Default Sometimes owning a jeep makes me feel like an idiot

Yesterday, I had taken it in to have my A/C recharged. While there, I was talking to him about that obnoxious knocking while it's at idle (the FLEXPLATE). The whole shop ***** their heads in confusion and says... "the FLYWHEEL??? It's a FLYWHEEL."

I also asked about the worn bushing in the UPPER CONTROL ARM. Again, heads go sideways in confusion. They tell me "Jeeps don't have control arms, that's a tracking bar."

Now, would I have made myself look like a real idiot if I asked about the TRACKBAR, that is mounted more forward on the Jeep?

Yes, they do. I was pointing out what I assumed was the upper control arm bushing, located on the axle side, when I was trying to find out about getting the worn bushing replaced. Then was told it wasn't a UCA, it was a tracking bar.

I'm all for doing my own work, accept when I don't have the proper equipment to do so. If I had a garage and the money to fill it with my own tools, I wouldn't be going to a mechanic.

i wasn't trying to belittle you, gauge, i was saying that our jeeps have trackbars and control arms, unlike what the garage had told you.

your uca bushing would be on the top of the axle, one on each side, while the track bar bushing would only be on the lower, passenger side of the axle.

i would simply take it to a different mechanic, one that knows what the difference is.

but these are somewhat easy to replace in your driveway.

Yeah... I had a pretty good idea what I was talking about when I was trying to price it from a mechanic. Heck, I'm going for this guy to replace it anyway. He priced me considerably lower than anyone else. Most wanted a few hundred, I just gotta slip this cat a fidy and get some change back. I don't have anything capable of lifting the jeep high enough off the ground, then drooping the axle to get at it. I considered it, but I don't feel safe doing it myself. Unfortunately, all my friends are not really familiar w/ how to even use a jack so getting much help is out of the question. I even tried to round up some locals... I don't get much love 'round here. <shrugz>

I'm always amazed that people who own cherokees know everything about every car ever made.

Well I assume they do, because they are always amazed by someone not knowing something about their particular model of their particular cherokee built that particular year when they go to a mechanic or an auto parts store. ohmergawd he thought I meant grand cherokeeee!!!11!!

Im not offended by my cherokee being called a grand by a autozone flunky but when it comes to someone who Id pay what 70 plus bucks an hour to work on my vehicle Id expect to know what is what. Of course I dont pay someone to do my work for me so I have never actually had this issue.
