We've always used a double mantle Coleman lantern for heat. Went to Colorado years back. Threw a poly tarp over the 8x10 tent. Kept as snug as a bug....... Of course we turned it off at night but it QUICKLY heated us in the morning. I just couldn't trust any kind of heater when I'm sleeping. Been a few years back that a couple hunters here climbed in the back of a camper topped pickup to warm up. Fired up the Coleman cook stove (probably worst as far as putting out carbon monoxide). Fell asleep and of course never woke up.
That's the best practice... Warm up, crawl in a good bag, and then shut it off. That's what we have always done. When I was about 10 my cousin and I fell asleep with one kerosene lantern burning in a fairly large bedroom. We were lucky Grandma came to check on us about two hours later. It was almost too late.
Definitely lucky! CO poisoning happens too often around here. Too many times fatal.
Hoping to do some camping soon. Applied waterproofing to the tents last year so they're good to go.
Maybe that will quiet them down a bit. lol Man I hate tents flapping, you can't get them tight enough to stop it. I slept out on the open ground all of my life and then I met my better half and a tent. Love one hate the other. lol
So your camping is mostly out in the open? We usually find a clearing in the woods plus the ridges are close together so wind isn't an issue. Use to sleep on the ground to but once the kids came along we started using tents. Also had a van we'd use.

Kind of the same thing here... I always slept in the open until I met my wife, then she wouldn't do it without at least a tent. Then after the kids came along we bought a Chevy bubble top camping van. The only problem with the van was it wasn't 4X4. But... I just made a swap deal with a good friend for the whole 4X4 drive train to set the van on so my adult kids and all the Grandkids can share it. The XJ was perfect for my wife and I until I rolled it, so I'm making a Cherovan for my wife and I with the new engine and running gear from the XJ.

That's what I am making a deal on for mine. 3/4 ton running gear with all the correct bolt in crossmembers from a wrecked van of the same year to bolt to the 350. It's going to cost me a sentimental 53 Chevy truck cab though. lol
But to get back on topic these XJ's are perfect for two people. And for those taller guys and gals they make these.
Hey might as well get something you'll get some use out of. And I was wrong. My friend's van was a an F350 1ton.
XJ's are just right to me. I did the CJ5 and 7 ,full and small Bronco,and early full size Blazers. Still LUV the CJ's. But for all practicalities the XJ's win.
Very interesting experience actually. In the winter forest, stay for a picnic, spend the night in the car. It is romantic, already captures the spirit. Especially cool, if the company is good, close friends. my GF and I have been sleeping in the back of the XJ on all of our trips since we first bought it. taking out the lower rear seat cushion is key
i picked up two 3" memory foam mattress toppers along with a nice stockpile of pillows and blankets (and two sleeping bags if it gets really cold)
we actually sleep great in the back compared to when we used to tent camp. im 6" and she is 5"3' so we are fairly comfortable as long as i put the seats forward

the seat bottom has a latch on one side. Pull the latch and lift up and pull towards you. The other side is just a pin that slides into a hole. Very easy comes out in seconds. Goes back in just as easy.
If you happen to be solo camping in theXJ you can also easily pull the passenger seat and leave it behind for a significant boost in cargo capacity. Its just 4 bolts. I can have mine out in a few minutes. You can construct a simple platform to greatly extend your sleep area too
Mine is totaly messy and unorganized at this point, but as you can see.. The inside of my wj has been converted to camping-able. I use a 6" memory foam pad with the wheel well area cut out, and I have it sized to extend a little more than half the inside width. I fit perfectly when I use it to sleep. For now I have the front passenger seat also removed, as I don't really need it, and wanted the extra space.
In no-time the seat bottoms etc go back in, and nobody would ever known it was used as a camper Jeep.
