Default Snow Tires on my XJ

Hi everyone, this winter will be my first with my xj and im excited and hope it performs much better than my current E46 which im sure it will. In a few days ill be getting some Blizzak WS90s put on and am curious if anyone has an experience using blizzaks on an XJ. I do live in minnesota so we get a pretty good amount of snow here and I need something thats as safe as possible to commute in and I think an XJ with snow tires is up there.

once again just curious what experiences yall have with snow tires on an XJ and more specifically Blizzaks.

Also the size tires that came on it were 215 60R16 which is what ill be putting on for the blizzaks.

Not Blizzaks but Winterforces. Never had an issue in upstate NY. Snow tires are so cool! I sorta wish I lived in an area that necessitates them, but I can now get away with all terrains all year.

Blizzaks should be cool - might even perk up the handling!

Snow tires are for vehicles that don't leave the pavement, they are a very poor choice for a Jeep because they are terrible off road even in the snow. A good set of AT or MT tires is all you need, mine does great in the snow on MT tires, I have pulled several people out of the ditch with them.

I Haven't used the blizzaks, but Bridgestone does make some good tires. My experience with mud grips on snow is not all that good. The trick with winter tires is to have plenty of sipes in the tread. The best tires I had on snow and ice was Michelin Lts. I did a lot of trips up OR 97, at least 100 miles of snow and ice in the winter. I was very comfortable with those tires and they didn't want to break loose even under acceleration or braking

I am very happy with my Kumhho AT51s on snow and ice. Haven't tried a true snow tire, but these are 4 season rated.

I have Goodyear Duratracs AT tires on 3 Jeeps and they've been great. They get high snow and ice ratings. I believe they get about the same numbers as the Goodrich KO2s.

You've never lived in the northeast, have you? Whole different ball game when nothing melts for 6 months out of the year.

That doesn't change anything, if fact the deeper the snow the more effective MT tires get and snow tires become less effective, not to mention they are totally worthless off road.

I agree. I have lived in the Sierras where there is lots of fresh snow. Mud grips work great there. But as stated, long term snow and ice is a different story, not to mention black ice. Mud grips, unless those with sipes like Duratracs become worthless in areas like the east side of the Cascades and other high desert areas

i have 225/75/15 firestone winterforce 2 currently on my xj, installed them last week.

snow tires are a different ball game and will undoubtedly make a ***** out of any at or mt tire on road when its 10* outside. the colder the temp and more snow the better the winter (snow) tires perform.

at vs snow tire on road in winter (below freezing) is no contest.

winter tires are not offroad tires and should not be compared as such.

Yeah, I think we're getting into it over the intention of the Jeep. If you're building a dedicated snow wheeler, yeah - use MTs and get a set of chains. But if you want to just get around in the regular world regardless of weather conditions in a place like Minnesota where winter doesn't play around, a spare set of dedicated winter/snow tires makes total sense... er, at least I think so. As s346k pointed out, temperature is a big factor too.

Default could be the spokesperson for blizzaks

***Older post...but can relate...Blizzaks are so great for ice imho. I run them on my XJ, and don't have the slippage that can happen on black ice. I drive a mini cooper, and once it got the winter tires, it did REALLY well for a car that doesn't have much clearance, it gives it "claws". I live on a steep icy hill in the rockies, so black ice alley. Hated that street in the winter, as do most of us, but now I bomb around securely with both vehicles. Makes a TON of difference for where I live.

Default All terrain tires in snow

We've had excellent luck with BFG KO2's (now KO3) All terrain tires in snow. However, ice on steep grades are best traversed with chains
