Was wondering, if I put on snow tires on my XJ and say for example one day no snow. Would the spikes in the tread be damaged? Would anything happen to my steering? I have an opportunity to pick some up at a pretty good price, and I dont want to spend the winter changing back and forth between the two.

No, you'll be fine. Winter tires are not only made for snow, the rubber in them is softer than a 4 season tires so it can have a better traction in cold weather, no matter if there's snow or not. Even if the tires has studs, you can drive them on a dry pavement in winter.

The studs are NOISY on dry pavement. You can remove the studs and just run the snows. Studs are for severe hardpack snow or ice. Think NWT or Alaska or even Winterpeg. (sorry couldn't resist
