It's doable. I've taken it a few times "ghetto camping" without a tent. I'm 6'3", though, so my feet hang out the back.

If I take the actual bottom cushion out from the back seat, and move the front seats forward as far as they'll go, I can actually fit there with the hatch closed.

I love this thread. I'll be camping in my Cherokee soon. I didn't realize the bottom of the back seat came completely out, I'll try that. I also bought some mesh and a magnet roll yesterday, I'm going to make nets for the windows to keep the bugs out. Great advice everyone, thanks!

My girlfriend got me one of those SUV-tents that attaches to the back of the Jeep. It'll be getting its first use this summer and should make sleeping in the Jeep with the hatch open a lot easier and less, er, mosquito-y.

+1 the reason behind sleeping in the back was to not have so much crap when i go camping.. this would fill up as much room as a tent would..

and also on the day of leaving i just throw the cooler and dry pack in the back of the jeep and off i go

I just tow mine behind my Motorhome. Much more comfortable! I have my XJ, YJ and JK (aka BOOM!) set up for towing.

Cute kid, but the pic reminds me of an old expression from my dad (RIP) which I think was in reference to me(!):

Kids in the back seat cause accidents.

A guy over on JF had an upholstery shop make this out of memory foam for like $200 for him.

Whenever I've done it I've taken a couple cases of water and put them in the rear wheel wells to prop up the back seat when it's down and just blow up an air mattress with a lot of blankets and pillows. Slept two without any complaints.

Pop up campers with A/C are pretty cheap anyway. I see them all the time around here for like $500. I've been looking at getting an MJ to chop the rear out of to make an offroad trailer for a while on 33s like my Jeep retrofit a pop up into the bed of.

I've done it a few times. Always keep a change of clothes in the Jeep. Long commutes and too tired to drive back. Call home to let them know. Lay down some carpet and one of those moving blankets levels out the back. Sleep like a baby. But did have to watch where I called it a night. I snore !

6'1 here. Done it a few times, only in the summer, and only in places where it's too buggy to leave the windows or hatch open without being eaten up. It's not comfortable. But, it is dry, and better than being on the ground. Definitly have to be able to sleep curled up though.

Short story: I'm 6'3 and it was a tight fit when I did it. I slept pretty much curled up the whole night.

Long story: We went camping. It was going to get down to 55/60 but it randomly rained on our way there and then it dropped to the low 50s high 40s. Drunkly we all climbed into our buddies ranger bed. But I finally said ef this and went into the back of my Cherokee. One kid own up in the outhouse the other was in the ranger and the other one was under a piece of carpet on the front porch but oddly enough no one went inside?? Lol
