I dont know if you tried or not, steam cleaning really helped. My carpet and seats were blackend with stains and stuff when I got it. My friend has a house hold steam cleaner, and it pulled all of it out along with any of the odor. Took a few hours but everything looked nearly new. Just an idea.

I was looking at it recently on this site:
http://www.fabricspray.co.uk/upholstery-spray-paint
was considering whether or not it might be any use on my seriously faded seats?. I dont think bedliner directly onto the carpet would be a good idea!.. would be interesting to see the results though!!.

Maybe it's just me, but an XJ (or any vehicle for that matter) without carpet seems pretty ghetto. No offense to anyone here, just my humble opinion. I had to drive mine for 2 trips without carpet & I was ashamed.
Last spring I sank my poor XJ & cried inside for weeks as I realized the carpet was NOT going to dry even tho I had peeled it back. Eventually I took it all out, discarded the padding, patched, painted, plugged ... cleaned the carpet & put it all back in. Instead of traditional padding I used 1/2 inch Neoprene which will not hold water, is heat resistant & not very expensive. Marine plugs & a fresh, clean carpet & I was back in business.
Keep your carpet, it just looks better unless it's a trail rig ... & even then, I'd keep the carpet, just make it easy to remove. Ripping it out just so you can hose the XJ out is lazy.
BTW if anyone's interested, I have clean new-looking tan colored XJ carpet that I had bought for mine. It came out of a 97. I decided to keep my old carpet after I saw how much more heavy duty it is than the carpet from the newer XJs.

If I had to do it again I would por-15 epoxy the floor then put some sound deadening and then the molded vinyl for the xj over that. I have the herculiner on there now and I wouldnt say its loud but you hear things that you normally wouldnt, especially on the highway and it gets a little warm.
