RPM gauge busted

RPM gauge busted
SO anyone know what would cause a rpm gauge to stop working? I have a 98 and mine doesn't work but occasionally if I plant down on the gas it will go from 0 counter clockwise and kinda work between 5 and 6. Any ideas?
