So what does everyone use for roadside assistance? Browsing the old inter web last night I came across an rant from a guy with a lifted jeep that was pissed cos he had a flat on the side of the road and his stock jack wouldn't give enough clearance to change out the tire. Several people stopped to help too but none of their jacks worked either.

This got me thinking. If I was to get a flat I have 33's and a 5.5" lift, would I be able to change the tire on side of the road? So anyway, wondering what everyone runs as a roadside kit, jack, tools, emergency kit and most important how u store it!

 

Get the stuff you need and keep it with you. Something to go under the jack?

 

Any telescoping bottle jack should do the trick.

The problem comes from the sidewalls of the tire being so big that when you get a flat there's not much room under the axle but it needs to be jacked a good amount to clear the spare that needs to go on.

my last jeep had a 3" lift and i ran one of these Hi Lift jacks, i had a mount put on the hood so it was there when i needed it.

Yeah I have AAA but like Cruiser said don't know if they can be counted on. I've heard a lot about the hi-lift jacks maybe that will be a good option. Do you need specific mount points to jack from with those?

So I don't have to deal with the DMV. Registration is done lickety split...walk in, pay, walk out. Worth every penny in my book, LOL

Besides, I'm the type of person who doesn't use roadside assistance. I fix the problem and move on. Very rarely have I EVER had to call a tow truck. But I have used AAA for that in the past, never had an issue.

 

I would highly suggest having aftermarket bumpers and sliders installed when using the hi-lift.

 

Yeah that's the problem exact my lift and tires I wanted to keep the exterior fairly stock right now. Not wanting to drop a fortune on aftermarket bumpers. So can I use the hi-lift without them?

 

you can at the risk of bending things, if you can find a Hi Lift jack with a larger jaw on it you can do what i did and use a towel and it will help with not scratching or bending things as much, it creates a buffer basically.

 

I wouldn't. The reach on the pedestal isn't deep enough to get to the lift points on the undercarriage...you'll end up crushing the rockers or damaging a stock bumper...potentially. We all know how flimsy the stock bumpers are. You may be able to, but as stated, I can't recommend it.

As far as dumping a ton of money into armor/recovery, there's lots of lower cost options out there. Just gotta hunt 'em down.

 

Thanks I appreciate the input. I would have hated to drop money into getting a nice hi-lift just to damage my ride the first time I use it. I guess for now I'll find a tall bottle jack and wedge it higher with something as a stable base

 

ive also seen where you can take a Hi Lift and use a smaller strap, go through your rim and lift an individual tire or area.
